New MKIII Body virtually ready

After a couple of months of pretty much solid design and little printing (although I have invested in a CR-10 s5 for bigger prints) I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The MKIII new design body is virtually complete... (I've got to 70 degree angling to add to the details, add door servos, cut it into three rings and add some supports! This has been a mammoth design and hopefully should p...

Update Fusion share for dedicated Patreons

Here’s the Fusion design with some of the new MKIII dome designs included!

More stuff coming soon, any requests for the fusion designs just shout! Please share any remixes or remodels with the fabulous R2 Builders community.

I also thought I’d put the links to all the fusion files in one note (and add to it as Patreon isn’t particularly user friendly. View Post

Utility Arms done! MKIII body testing

Well, the basic main body design is getting there. All the greebles are designed and fixings done, redesigned the vents plate, so much easier to build. The utility arms have been today’s task, simplifying the whole design and build (I’ve found simplifying the build means much longer and complex design time :-)) anyhow, see above for the gear based utility arms, really simple, three parts and t...

New R5 dome and body update

The new body design is moving along well, countless updates and fixes I’ve incorporated. The focus is to make it three rings as single prints for the 500mm bed guys, take out as much weight as possible and give loads of room in the centre. Making it easy print with no support etc. The first v2 body took me 9 months to design, so it’s a long process as every hinge, mechanism, screw hole has to ...

Updates...

Lots of designing recently and not a lot of new models. I’m working on the new MKIII body at the moment. Originally started as taking the printed design and linking together to create three rings. As I got into the details I quickly realized this was a bad idea. There is loads of overhangs, way too much plastic and there’s a few things I wanted to fix. So I’m a good way through a new MKIII b...

MKIII Body update

Hey, I've spent most of today on the MKIII, 3 ring body. I was working on the split design and making it into a single body and then cutting it. Hit loads of issues with support and there's also a few things I wanted to fix (including simplifying the door hinges amongst others) as well as incorporating the 70 degree support and loads of stuff I learn't since I designed the body. So I decided the s...

MKIII domes

Hi, we have R2, R4, R5 and R7 available as MKIII domes, these are specifically designed for the 500mm beds, no internal fins, so less filament, all use 70 degree for details so no support to remove and clean prints (except R5 as it does have built in support). They have inbuilt rings as well and panels built in. Really should be clean and simple to print! (In the Patreon share).

For the t...

Fusion 360 tutorials... my way... :-)

Hi all,

Here's the latest Fusion video 6, showing part 6 of creating the R4 Dome in Fusion finally published a printable single file! Also shared is the final Fusion design. Password for the Fusion Shares is mrbaddeley

I've added the backlog of of links also as I know Patreon isn't easy to sort through.

Links to Fusion. 2nd try :-)

Here’s the Fusion design for the legs and greebles (as requested 😊).

I also thought I’d put the links to all the fusion files in one note (and add to it as Patreon isn’t particularly user friendly.

All files are free to do whatever you want to with (except selling or making money from them, as many Bothans died to bring us this information!).

The password for all these...

R2 MKIII dome - weird corruption

Hi all, please note I've just uploaded a new R2 d8ome (MKIII), the original had a weird corruption in the STL, came in at 80+MB, low res and had a piece missing on the ring element. Just noticed and fixed with a new (higher res and smaller file!).

Apologies for anyone who's got it on the bed, but please check, you'll see two gaps on the first part of the ring print.

R2 MKIII dome - Single, easy print....

R2 MKIII single print dome as the 500mm bed interest explodes! I've revised the single print dome completely incorporating many "simplifications" to ease a single print dome with virtually no support. All details use a 70 degree overhand, which is virtually invisible but means no support on the panel lines. This domes has all the panels as part of the single print (of course the more complex model...

Just a little test.... R4

I'm testing the 70 degree overhang, so I've redesigned the two rings (for the R4 at this moment). Basically rather than split the print so the 90 degree overhang prints separately, I've used a 70 degree overhang and combined the two rings. This appears to print without support whilst keeping the detail. Perfect!!! (It also means the body print can also be done this way). Next problem was how to pr...

PLA plus

Quick update as it’s been a little while since I posted. Just testing PLA plus, on paper it looks like the ‘droids we’re looking for’ prints like PLA with no warping, stronger and more flexible than both PLA and ABS! ( apparently 10 times stronger than ABS.. hmm) and doesn’t warp / ‘melt’ at low temps once printed. Glues with Superglue.. so looks superb!! and ideal for the single dom...

Dome reworking

I've done quite a bit of rework on the R7 dome to test some changes. Basically whilst the separate panels are easy to paint, they're harder to get fixed in and aligned, so I've added the panels into the design. Also I've found I can add a 70 degree angle on the details, which means no support for the line detail. Sooo, it's an easy print (hopefully) and means we can pretty much print these, chip o...

R2UK!

Hi all,

For all you UK based chaps I’ll be at the upcoming R2UK meet this weekend. I’ll be giving an overview of design / 3d printing and hopefully having some interesting Q&A / discussions. I’m going to try to bring as much printed stuff as possible with me also (hopefully including the current in design centre leg lift). Grab me and say hello if you’re around. Looking forward to me...

Electronics.

Added a pot initially for position control feedback, you can just see it on the left. Works very well with a good degree of accuracy. I’ve just run the first Arduino controlled movement but I only had L298N driver to hand (2amps max) so the motor blew it almost immediately as I suspected. I’ve just ordered a 43amp driver from eBay which should come in early next week. The motor is fast and pow...

Motor gear and plate. Test one, 12v drill motor...

So the first test is to try using a 12v drill motor to drive the center leg lift. It’s pretty torquey and I’ve geared it down. I’ll drive using a DC driver and Arduino (dedicated Arduino for the 2-3-2). Let’s see how it goes. Still printing the mounting frames.

Workshop done, starting on motor frame for leg lift

Quite a lot of work in the last few weeks, mainly rebuilding my printer, fixing the other one and moving everything to my new build workshop outside (previously in the dining room).
Got my motors now also, so I’m just printing the first test of the mounting frame and gearing for the centre leg lift. The printer issues have slowed this down a little but fingers crossed we’re back at full sp...

Another great model

As I browse the internet and find the odd great thing to print I do like to share from time to time. Star Wars related, DL-44 Han’s blaster. I’ve just printed and nearly finished apart from the grips but it’s a great model. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1915956

Domes, domes and updates

Well, we’ve four single print domes now available for all you CR10 s5 users! R2, R4, R5, R7 all done. R9 and R6 to follow shortly. I’ve also ordered a couple of motors to test the centre leg lift mechanism. I’ve got a brushless and a brushed dc drill motor. If the drill motor struggles, then we’ll move to the brushless. Finally just started work on a three ring body for the big printer fol...

Dome Zapper files in the Patreon share (WIP folder)

I've completed the first version of the dome zapper, with cable grooves for LEDs or actual nodes, I've also added a control arm so it can flex at the elbow with a servor (S3003 I used for scaling).

It's still Work in Progress and not been tested but feel free to give it a try. It's a small scale accessory, so the details / pieces are small and I haven't at this stage tested it.
