New MKIII Body virtually ready

After a couple of months of pretty much solid design and little printing (although I have invested in a CR-10 s5 for bigger prints) I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The MKIII new design body is virtually complete... (I've got to 70 degree angling to add to the details, add door servos, cut it into three rings and add some supports! This has been a mammoth design and hopefully should prove as (if not more) popular than the V2. The Legs, Dome etc will fit this one, I have redesigned the greebles for easier fitting and mounting. It has a whole lot of plastic taken out for weight and cost with threaded bars running the length of the body for strength. It simply wasn't possible to take the V2 and create three rings without virtually solid supports, so this one is designed with inbuilt supports also and all cuts have been made to print cleanly. Obviously not quite at the test stage, but not far away!! This version has the rear door built in solid, so access through the top / dome. I may do a door version of this but with the door built in it will make the whole assembly much stronger. From this I then intend to make a simple version (no doors opening) and the other R series (2,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc) as the design changes for each. Only a week or so now I hope!

Happy printing!

Mike

Interested to hear from the group. From my perspective, when I did the MKIII I took a lot of plastic out and relied on the skin for some of the core strength, hoping the threaded bars would add strength. Now I’ve printed it and tested the frame I was happy that the core strength would be more than enough with the back panel. Hence the release. Still has the main pillars and threaded bars, so I’m happy with the structural strength. You can add extra bracing with fibre glass and potentially bars or wooden struts, I don’t believe these are needed though on a standard build. The 2-3-2 isn’t a published, working design although there’s one Troy is working on which looks very promising. I think it’s v2, so will need tweaking for the MKIII.

As I’ve studied Patreon, read many posts twice, i am debating a big one! I am finished printing the dome, upper ring and lower ring and I am moving on to the MK III body. I want to do the 2/3/2 r2 and I’ve always wanted to have a rear door on R2 for accessibility vs through the top. I noticed here you mentioned the rear door would decrease strength. Moving forward a year or two how does everyone feel about the mkIII with or without rear door in reference to overall strength. (Printing in petg, 10-15% infill)

Hey Dominick, the files are in the wip folder, under MKIII, there you’ll find the 3 ring body.

Hey mike I'm looking for a full body stl similar to this one but I've checked all the one drive folders an I can not find one. any help? thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply. I am currently looking for a large scale printer. I am going to print my second R2 with the new design. I am excited to see your updated designs and improvements! My first R2 has functioning dome and body tools and panels. If you need testers, I am happy to help.

Hi Timothy, I’ve seen a few builds with access via removing the dome which is what I plan to do in this case. Once the first test is done I will probably introduce a larger rear door access but wanted to keep it simple on the first release.

Michael Baddeley

Hmm, with no rear door, did you have a way to access the electronics in mind? Wiring seems like it would be very difficult without some scheme in place I think.

Timothy Hebel

I'm just setting my printers back up now. So excited!

Bring it on!! I’m struggling with multiple pieces shrinking and being slightly out of shape

I love it! Will almost certainly start working on body #2 once this is released.

You're awesome!!!

Thanks i have not begin to print the body yet i ask if i wait the v3 cut or i begin with v2
