Business Strategy: Backlist & Forwardlist

So, I was thinking about the different models of work and how an author can subsist. And one of the thoughts that struck me was the different methods authors (mainly) generate their incomes depending on the way they structured their business.

Either are looking to subsist on their backlist (i.e. books already published which generate income) or forwardlist (books that aren't published yet...

The Second Expedition - Spoiler Full Discussion Thread

I've just realized we haven't done this for The Second Expedition!

Feel free to discuss your thoughts about the book here. Theories, favorite moments, questions that bug you, etc. Nothing counts as spoiler here ;)

The e-book is currently going live on Amazon as each timezone reaches midnight, so I'm going to delete the chapters from here and the bookfunnel link will expire very soon...

Patron Voted Short Stories

So, I realised you all are super excited about the idea of voting upon giving me ideas for the System Apocalypse Classes.

There's a ton of great ideas, just ones that don't fit into the specific scene / set of scenes I'm writing.

On the other hand, I think they're pretty cool. And I'm sure there'd be a lot of other things I could do to write about, touching upon those Classes or Tit...

On Shorts: A Business Prespective (1)

Alright, since a bunch of people wanted to know about this. Here's the business side of writing shorts.

Added material for fans

I first started writing shorts as added material for fans. That's what the Kapoosh and Lana story shorts are for. Neither one are 'traditional' shorts, in that they are more slice of life. They are great for fans to read, and wha...

Help Needed! (System Apocalypse)

So, I need a list of some truly 'Earth only' kind of Classes that would be cool. It could be because of culture (Mikito's Samurai comes to mind) or because of technology / weird circumstances, etc.

For the rest of the tiers, I'll update using the established schedule (Tue-Thu-Sat), which means Advanced Prestige Class should be able to read the last chapter on 24th, while Advanced class will reach the end on 26th.

Marketing Strategy Development: Example 4

Alright, last example of the way you can use the information within to develop a marketing strategy.

We have Xiu Li, a traditionally published young adult author who managed to be signed by a traditional publisher, but the publisher subsequently dropped her due to low (for them) sales. She managed to sell just over 3000 copies, which unfortunately wasn't sufficient for her publisher...

Writing Update & Concerns for SA 10

Hi guys;

So, after taking last week off to get the co-authored work going (which is going great and are just out to beta readers right now. If any of you are romance readers and want to beta read, let me know ;) ) I'm back to System Apocalypse 10. I got about 4k written between yesterday and today.

Except, the proofread arrived for  ATL 4, which means I have to go over that. View Post

A Healer's Gift Artwork

Hi guys;

Figured you'd get a kick out of this. This is the work I had commissioned for A Healer's Gift. I'm going to get it formatted and then made into a print and thus a real light novel.

:)

Yes. I don't expect to sell much. It's just for fun.

Let me know what you guys think.

I'm probably going to produce a few once it's all ready and dis...

Streams of Income and Investment in Licenses

Been seeing some interesting conversations and one that I wanted to discuss was a very simplistic (in my view) review of streams of income and return on investment (ROI). Basically, a lot of questions / answers end up reviewing if they should do X (when X is often audiobooks or paperbacks or another form of their work) on a straightforward ROI basis.

Rather than talk generalities, I'm goi...

Secondly, wanted to mention a few quick updates, though most of you should have seen the update on FB.

Selling Direct - Payhip, Wordpress and More

Some of you might know I have a Payhip account. Some might know I even sell signed copies of my work on my website.

I was inspired to test it out by some comments on higher income and the need to have multiple sources of income. Now, multiple sources of income is incredibly important as a writer, mostly because without it, you're extremely open to shocks in your distribution chain. ...

Translated books

Tao has a few books translated and was wondering if you'd like the epub/mobi in advance like with the other books we post here, on Patreon.

Do we have any German speakers here? Spanish? Portugese?

Feel free to leave a comment in a language you're interested in (disclaimer: this is just for my curiosity).

Marketing Strategy Development: Example 3

We've done a couple of new writers, but let's tackle an experience Writer. We'll call him Manjit.

Manjit's got six books released in two different series (4 and 2). He's done okay for himself in Kindle Unlimited and baseline gets a few hundred dollars a month with release months getting him a thousand to two thousand on release. He's not done a lot of publicity though, most of his marketi...

Marketing Strategy Development: Example 2

We talked about Bob in the previous example who might end up going trad pub since he's not that interested in building a career. but let's talk about Sue next.

Sue's a little different from Bob. She's a housewife, takes care of her kids and loves writing; but isn't sure if he wants to become a full-time author. It'd be nice, but it's really tough she knows. On the other hand, she has some...

Marketing Myth - Your Next Book is Your Best Marketing Tool

This isn't a completely wrong myth. In fact, it's the most common advice given to new writers - and I give it too all the time. All too often, writers will write one book, do a bunch of marketing, see some sales, drop off the 30 day cliff and then stop and come into other author groups asking - 'what other marketing things should I do?'.

And the more experienced authors all shout - go wri...

Marketing Strategy Development: Example 1

Alright, we did a ton of theory, but let's talk a few examples. We'll call example one, Bob.

Bob wants to write a book. He's not sure he ever wants to write more than one, it's kind of a bucket list item. He's thinking what he'd like to write a biography of his grandfather or perhaps, a full historical war novel around world war 2.

In that sense, he's not sure he'll ever do more tha...

Tao Writing & Life Update (7/21/2020)

I've been feeling a little stressed and tired.

My shoulders / neck have started acting up again, putting me in near constant pain. I'm not sure if it's the cold that refuses to go away, the sudden bout of chill (temperatures dropping down to like 2C at night) or just the old injury flaring up.

That's made me less happy about working, but I have a schedule to keep so I'm pecking away...

10 Things to know about Indie Publishing

Alright, I was asked to do a post about indie publishing and common misconceptions, so here we go:

1) Series sell better than stand-alones, but book 1 will always sell the best

Generally, the best way to make money indie publishing is to publish series. The corollary to that is that book 1 will always sell better than any other book. So, if you sold a 100...
