December 2021 Updates

Sorry for the delay.

All versions of advmame were fixed for compiling on newer GCC.

We switched to the upstream libretro flycast core (newer), however there were issues with Naomi support (now fixed), and an an issue with the core on rpi 0/1/2/3 with videocore which is not yet fixed, so for now we have reverted back to the older libretro core.

tyrquake was updated to 0.69

October / November Updates

Sorry for the delay.

I have been very busy with work and have had less time to spend on RetroPie.

Since the last update:

Emulation Station was updated to the latest development version. One of the major changes was the support of pixel positioned themes. Our new default carbon theme is now carbon-2021 that uses this. If you have updated you can switch to this theme from within...

Update coming..

Apologies for no recent monthly update. I will do one in the next few days.

I will mention the biggest change though - Mitu wrote and incorporated an on screen keyboard for use when entering WiFi password.

Hope everyone is well. Stay safe out there.

September update

Merged some changes made back in June that add additional menus to the "Manage Packages" menu. You can now manage "all installed packages" and "all available packages" in a single list.

Merged Dankcushion's code to use RetroArch joypad autoconfigs to add button labels to our generated controller configs for RetroArch. This makes configuring joypads in RetroArch's RGUI easier.

August update

The new SDL2 Joy2key was moved into its own core module. This should be automatically installed when updating to v4.7.18 or later.

An issue was fixed with RetroPie-Setup's use of apt-get not installing dependencies due to Raspberry Pi OS Buster moving to oldstable release tag in packaging. This was fixed by Mitu by adding an additional parameter (--allow-releaseinfo-change).

June and July updates

The PlayStation emulator core lr-duckstation was added (by Dankcushions). Currently in experimental but it's an excellent PlayStation emulator for faster devices like the rpi4/PC etc.

I did a bunch of packaging fixes related to version checking etc. Basically bugs related to the new packaging improvements as some emulators when built from source would incorrectly think there was an updat...

No June update

Sorry. I forgot to do an update for June. There has been quite a few changes so I plan to write up some details at the weekend covering changes for June and July

Thanks for all your support as always.

May update

RetroArch has now been updated to v1.9.4 from v1.8.8 - we skipped some versions and waited due to upstream issues that needed to be sorted, as well as having to update our patches.

There have been various small fixes for packages, including:

ppsspp assets loading issue
lr-gpsp workaround to use old gcc6 to avoid crashes is no longer needed and removed.
lr-mgba - fixed buildi...

April update

Not a lot to report in the code side. I've been looking at a few things but also haven't had as much time to spend on RetroPie as usual.

It's not unusual for me to spend 30+ hours a week on RetroPie on top of my day job. But in the last few weeks I've not had as much free time. I appreciate the support from everyone here - thanks.

Regarding changes:

Further improvements to package management

Just a quick update to let you know what I've been working on.

After the recent overhaul of source package management (so source packages only update when there has been changes) there were some issues from some users with slow connections. This has been resolved and I improved the network error messages that are shown when things fail.

There have been others minor issues with the...

Slightly embarrassing code change

My recent packaging changes were merged recently as I detailed in the last post.

While rebuilding new binaries though I noticed a mistake - I had set (for debugging purposes) a variable to "moooo" and had forgotten about it.

It's totally normal to use "moo" or variations of it for debugging.. isn't it? :-)

Here's the commit removing it

RetroPie package updating improvements

Amongst other changes I have recently been improving package updating within RetroPie. A while ago I made it so binaries were only updated when there was a new version, but source installs would always rebuild everything when updating.

With a PR I recently merged ( https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPi...

Thanks

The patreon app has been playing up so I'm sorry if any new supporters didn't get a message from me.

Thanks to all of you for your support. With RetroPie 4.6 now released there's still plenty more work to do and new bugs to fix.

I will also try and do more updates here. It would help if the mobile app would allow more than 1 character to be typed every second. Horrible!

Weekly images

While we are still working on various issues with RPI4 support you can get a hopefully working pre-alpha image from

https://files.retropie.org.uk/images/weekly/

No splashscreen support yet. But most of the main emulators should work. We can't support this image yet, but we are close to an alpha r...

RetroPie status and ongoing 4.5 issues

RetroPie 4.5 images are still delayed. I didn't update here but I reported it on twitter in a couple of posts. Last one was yesterday.

Hopefully this will be resolved soon. With the release of the RPI4 I won...

4.5 progress

Just a quick update to let you all know the 4.5 release is still being worked on but should be ready soon. It is later than I expected though.

In the last few weeks there have been some fixes for lr-pcsx-rearmed, an update to fuse (which required a fix for the RPI), updated jzintv, and a bunch of other changes.

A SDL 2 update had to be rolled back due to controller issues but thi...

Quick update

Thanks to all the new backers. I've not paid as much attention to backers as I should but development on RetroPie has been ongoing.

Last weekend a new Emulation Station was released with 2 working built in scrapers (the work for this was done by contributors and is much appreciated).

There's been a lot of other updates including the addition of Skyscraper to experimental packages,...

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who has backed me. I plan to look into setting some goals, but need to think what could work.

I had a bit of a rest after the 4.4 release, but did some changes over the weekend. Also upgraded the forum software (and ran into a few problems, but it's sorted now).

This weekend I did some fixes for lr-mame2003-plus as well as a fix for runcommand. Upcoming things are:
