Commissioned Drawing

A commissioned piece for a New Year’s event

Looseness

Trying a different approach, this is a digital piece but I used digital charcoal brushes in an attempt to teach myself to be looser.

Aurélie portrait study

Following the advice from my previous post, since I’ve been feeling a little frustrated with drawing recently, I switched it up and did a painting, which I haven’t done in quite a while.

On Doubt and Creative Block

I was asked the following by a Patron:

“I suppose a helpful subject you might be able to speak about would be any hacks, tips, practices (or hell even affirmations) you might have employed previously to persevere when self-doubt or uncertainty creeps up.

(I am of course assuming you have, on occasion, dealt with such. Maybe you haven't? But I suspect long-standing pro...

Sigourney

Finally starting to recover from being sick, and so I was able to start drawing again. Here‘s a study of Sigourney Weaver from a photo by Helmut Newton.

Possession Poster Study

Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession (1981) is one of my favorite horror movies, and since living in Berlin it has taken on a new significance for me, as I now recognize many of the shooting locations. It’s a weird, surreal, nasty little film that operates with the same kind of dream logic that David Lynch does so well. I pitched a poster to a prominent boutique pop culture poster publisher but it...

Catwoman Commission

A recent commission piece I drew, for a customer who asked for a Darwyn Cooke-era Catwoman. Fun drawing her again after so long!

From the archives

I’m still quite sick, so this week I will post older images from my archives that I never put anywhere public. This one is a study I did of my dear friend and frequent muse Lil Lady Dee.

Apologies

Hey everyone, my apologies for not posting recently, I was on a vacation and while I was away I contracted Covid, so I have been recuperating. I am going to take the rest of the weekend to rest but will have some new art for you on Monday. In the meantime thank you for your patience and continued support!

Redraw

This is a quick redraw of an older sketch I never posted anywhere, I was never really happy with how it looked so I made a revision of it. I’m still not super happy with her face but c’est la vie!

Study

Been busy with a bunch of work this week that I sadly can’t share yet. This is a sketch that I did a while ago but never posted anywhere, so you get to see it here!

Marshal Law WIP

As you may have guessed from these last few posts, I’m working on some commissions and these are the pencils.

When I was a kid I loved Marshal Law, and had absolutely no understanding of the huge BDSM/Leather Daddy vibes of the character. I just thought he had a cool uniform!

Rogue WIP

This is a work in progress, I still have to add a background and fix some things, but I figured I would let you see it half-finished!

Texture Study

Drew this in order to practice different material textures - trying to render the fuzzy sweater, leggings and shiny leather boots in different styles that still felt cohesive.

Influences

I wanted to make a post about some of my primary influences as an illustrator. I find inspiration from many sources, I use photographs and movies for reference, I look at illustration and fine art, but there are a few key artists whose work strongly influences mine.

The Bear

I love the tv series The Bear. I love it because it is a show about passion, about the drive to create something extraordinary, and the spiritual struggle that the creative person must often experience. The word “passion” is derived from the Latin word “passio“ - which means to suffer or endure. The act of creating anything - whether it is a drawing, a three-star meal, a television seri...

Cabaret Timelapse

This one came about when I didn’t expect it - I was sketching and started to think about drawing a full piece, but I was sort of making it up as I went and didn’t fully work out the composition, so there is some improvisation going on here (I’ll let you in on a secret - my work is often much more improvisational than you’d think). Olya as Sally Bowles was obviously going to be the cente...

Otto & Olya - Cabaret

Even though I’ve lived in Berlin for many years for some reason I’ve never seen Cabaret - a classic Berlin story. I corrected that recently and watched the 1972 film with Liza Minnelli. I loved it and was sketching her character Sally Bowles, and decided that I could do an homage piece with Otto & Olya.  I will return to posting story pages soon!

V toning/color timelapse

To be honest I’m not entirely sure the colors on this one work to my full satisfaction - I was attempting something new by adding an adjustment layer over the grayscale and adding some random patches of bright color, then tweaking it after. I was initially happy with it but looking back I feel like it’s missing something. May return to this one at some point.

Fight Club Audition Pages

I was going though old artwork and came across these three pages, which I believe have not been seen anywhere else.  Nearly a decade ago I had heard that Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, was planning to do a sequel as a comic book, to be published by Dark Horse Comics. I had a good and long-standing relationship with DH from my work on BPRD and they had published by original graphic ...

Otto & Olya Pages 10-11 Timelapse

At the beginning of this timelapse you can see where I was originally laying out ideas for page 3, before changing my mind and working on this image. I had thought this would be a cover or promotional image but decided that it worked well as a title page.

Otto & Olya Pages 10-11

I know this is a bit of a cheat but this technically is a 2-page spread!

The music to accompany this image is Sheep On Drugs’ “Track X” which is pretty hard to find online - it was covered by Grace Jones as “2023-07-27 14:42:43 +0000 UTC View Post
