I love the tv series The Bear. I love it because it is a show about passion, about the drive to create something extraordinary, and the spiritual struggle that the creative person must often experience. The word “passion” is derived from the Latin word “passio“ - which means to suffer or endure. The act of creating anything - whether it is a drawing, a three-star meal, a television series - often involves emotional suffering, the knowledge that true excellence is possible but perhaps just slightly higher than you can reach. But reach we must, we have to push ourselves further, and feel the harsh sting of disappointment when we inevitably fall short of the vision. It’s pain, and I have felt a lot of it over the years as I have judged my own work more harshly than any critic. I also think it’s necessary, masochistic though it may be, to keep the pressure on, keep pushing and never settle for something that’s merely “okay.” If you‘re right type of person there’s joy to be found in the torture.
