So I'm thinking about April's tutorials - and a little cliched I know, but the duckling in the daisies for Easter, we can do a bit of the grass and the daisies plus the fluffy duckling.
Big Red and Drum horse I want to start work on this month and start drip feeding the tutorials to you all - It's a big project so won't come all at once. This is one of DayDream Photography's gorgeo...
2021-03-15 14:07:34 +0000 UTC View PostHi all - as you know I swapped to using Vimeo a while ago to keep my tutorials secure - and then I swapped back due to the poor user experience.
Some of the tutorials are still up on Vimeo, but I’ve now been hit with a two week deadline from Vimeo to either pay 12k or to reduce the number of streaming hours (hidden very carefully in their ts and cs is a clause that states the top 1% of...

This is the video that I've broken down into areas so that I can share techniques with you, where I talk about when things went wrong, and how I tried to rectify them.
Hopefully it will be useful :)

Part of the black and white cat - the eyes can now be a stand alone tutorial as they were lovely to do and did work out really well.
The black and white tutorial of when things go wrong and different techniques will be available very soon - just need to pull it all together :)
Attached are the hi res image and the materials list pdf.

The eyes I will create a focus video for on their own - they're really lovely to draw actually with some gorgeous colours, so if you want to practice your eyes that would be a good one.
The Black and white bits I will share clips of the vide...

This is going to be March's focus - how do we get crisp white whiskers over black fur. I'm going to also create those gorgeous green eyes - so if you just want to concentrate on that you can, or of course that little pink nose :) I'm thinking of being brave and going down the fabriano route - wish me luck!

Sorry it's taken a little longer to edit - but here is part 5, and the rest will hopefully come today or tomorrow :)
the video stops at 51 minutes, it's not missing anything, it's just there's a stray clip that got in at 1 hour 30 that's nothing to do with the tutorial, and it takes so long to upload that I'm just going to leave this one. So when it goes black at 51 mins - that's this par...

I've updated and refreshed the core pencil list - it's a document that keeps growing as I find more pencils that are useful for animal portraits.
These are my favourites, I've added an asterisk to the magic pencils - these are the ones that are amazing for blending and smoothing.

This was going to be the subject of my USA Tour, but sadly due to current circumstances all my in person workshops have been cancelled. So - lovely Rose From Daydream photography is allowing me to use it as a tutorial :)
Now it's a complicated one and demands quite a large size I feel, so it could be that I drip feed the videos, potentially over a couple of months.
There are s...

New video uploaded - the HD version is still rendering, but should all be lovely and sharp very soon :)
We start to work into the face and the muzzle area. Shading is going to be your friend in this area - if you want to skip and listen to a bit of shading info you can find it at 1 hour 9 minutes in :)

March’s tutorial ❤️
They may look complicated but actually they aren’t - just some round fluffy pencil strokes for the baby and a paint brush for the parent. Who’s looking forward to drawing them? From a wonderful photo with permission from Sue Flood 🥰
Edited to say it's on Pastelmat board - I had a good think and honestly that fluff and that large expanse of pale feath...

Patreon is frustrating with its scrolling feed, and I have many messages every day with people confused and frustrated who can't find the tutorials.
You hopefully will have seen and been guided to my website where I have the tutorial library, but I wanted to do a quick video giving you a tour around Patreon, and show you all the easy ways to find what you're looking for :)

Creating the soft ear with the different textures, using rich colour to help with the depth.
I talk about making sure you follow the hair direction and the length, and we use upward strokes for the shadows to make the hair more believable.
2021-02-20 20:18:23 +0000 UTC View PostI'm working on the penguins - there is a lot of expanse of colour and doing the same thing over and over - so - during the times where I'm just repeating the same techniques - what would you like me to talk about - what would be useful?

In this part of the video we work on the eyes - don't worry if they don't come to life straight away - once you get the dark areas around them they will start to really pop.
I'm using lightfast hot press paper, you can use what you like, other hot press papers will work fine as will pastelmat and drafting film if you choose that.

This is one of two pre tutorial videos - in this one I'm just tweaking the colour slightly as the blue cast was a little strong. I'm using lightroom, but you should be able to do something like this in any photo editing programme.
The next part will be discussing the colours in the black fur and how we can make things just a little less daunting :)

Packed with details, and info on how to get rich black fur, and I've made it easier for you and used lots of black lol!
I've added colour - but done it in a simpler way so it's easier to understand - being told you can't use black when drawing black fur can be really demoralising, so this one uses blacks and greys - and of course, blues, yellows, pinks and reds, but in an easy to un...
