Tiger Part 2 - The Ear

I love the technique in this part of the tutorial.

It takes a little while to get your brain to understand you don't need to start with details but instead concentrate on tonal values and colour.

With drafting film it's so much easier to then put those fine details in afterwards.

Trust the process, believe in yourself, whack that colour in and then add the details ...

This is part one of the ears and forelock of the gorgeous Drum Horse. I had to split it as the video was just too long for one video. I may well come back in and darken when I start doing the rest of the face.

Tiger - Part 1, The Eyes

Part 1 of the gorgeous young tiger.

This piece is being drawn on Grafix Drafting Film .005 Double Matt. The size paper is A4 (21x29cm/8.5x11.5"). I have filled pretty much the whole of the A4 with the image so I'd leave a little more space side to side so you can frame it.

Photo ref Clare Watkins, please make sure you credit Clare whenever sharing your tiger.

Your code for Topaz Gigapixel and Sharpen

In art club today it was all things technology, using photoshop, light room and procreate. One of the things I demonstrated is Topaz gigapixel - a software that Ruth Hoyt introduced to me last year and which is an extremely useful piece of software for anyone working with commissions - it basically allows you to enlarge very small photographs and actually enhances them, Topaz Sharpen does exact...

Our full tutorial for May

Very excited about this one - and it's from a gorgeous photo from one of our community members - Clare Watkins - thank you so much!

He is a young tiger and I think has such a lovely expression

There are some great lessons in this one - whiskers for one, different fur qualities, those colours and of course the tones.

I'm also thinking as well of creating this piece as a full on...

Perseus - Queen's Drum Horse. He's underway :)

I know you've been waiting patiently for this piece :)

I've started him today and will start to upload in the next couple of days.

This tutorial is slightly different in that I will be drip feeding it through bit by bit, each bit will have it's own materials list as I won't be completing him in one go.

By doing it this way, he will be available to all the tiers :)&...

A bit of a different direction…

I've really enjoyed drawing the little girls on the pony, and I feel I could start to do more humans and share what works for me. So I'm putting this out there tentatively as a possible tutorial for the future.

I want to specialise in animals, but feel that with my teaching I can't use different mediums like pastels as my allergies won't allow me to - so looking at other subject mat...

Future dog and horse tutorials…

I have been given permission by Kerri-Ann Afford to use some of her imagery, and also some amazing images from Lizzy Mint. I will be starting the drum horse as soon as my personal piece of the two little girls on the pony is finished - which will be this weekend I hope - I have a workshop with the Dallas chapter of the CPSA tomorrow which I'm excited about, so not much drawing time tomorrow. Quick Note :) Please read

Good morning everyone and Happy Easter

I've seen quite a few comments about not being able to find Part 1 of the Jack Russell. I suspect that the email didn't get to everyone.

Please don't rely on emails from Patreon to find tutorials - I can't control these and they seem to be a little sporadic!

Please watch the navigation video, and use the search function that is on the mai...

Part 1 - The Eye.

I call this a beginners tutorial as I go into great depth in the creation of the piece, it's suitable for anyone wanting to create a realistic pencil drawing on drafting film.

If you just want to practice eyes, then this is a great video showing you how to create a realistic eye on drafting film.

Jack Russell - Beginners - Part 2 The Ear

If you're wanting to get to grips with soft fur, but don't want to follow the whole tutorial, then you could just work on the ear.

Understanding how to layer and build colour on drafting film will give you some great tools and techniques for working on this great surface with your own work.

Jack Russell - Beginners - Part 3 The top of the Head

Guide to the different kinds of coloured pencils

In this video I show you the majority of the coloured pencils I use, I talk about how they feel, how they work together and when I would and wouldn't use them.

Coloured Pencils are all different, even the ones within the same brand, and learning the differences will really help you select which ones will work best for you.

I'm attaching colour charts for all the pencils I've mention...

Beginner Tutorial - bone structure and veins on Pastelmat

In this version of July's beginners tutorial, I'm using white pastelmat board to create the soft undulating curves of a horses bone structure and veins.

It's a very simple short video, showing how I start off adding in colour, and then using my putty eraser to create the soft highlights.

Using minimal pencils as it's the tonal values that are most important, hopefully my techniques ...

Beginner Tutorial - Drawing Wrinkles on Fabriano Artistico

In this tutorial I show you how to create wrinkles on Fabriano Artistico. I talk though understanding pressure, burnishing and how to create under layers that then allow you to add details later and the importance of tonal values.
