Bichon Curly Fur - Part 4

Last part of this focus - I haven't gone into huge detail in the nose and muzzle area as the focus was on the fur. Really hope this has been a useful tutorial :)

Bichon White Curls - Part 2

Part 2 of this tutorial. It looks quite messy for a while, but we're aiming to create lots of shapes so that they can be filled with shadows etc.

Q&A - Saturday 21st November 3pm GMT

For this month's Q&A we have a special guest :)

Myles is a chemist who has been doing some surface analysis on some of our favourite papers. He was a guest on Art Club a couple of months ago and it was fascinating to hear about the archival qualities and to see the papers we use on a daily basis really up close.

Myles will present to us and then be open for questions, and ...

Hare Part 2 - Background

Part 2. There is little voice over on this as it is just going over and over the background using the luminance Buff titanium for burnishing, Dark Flesh 5% and 40%, Brown Ochre 10%, Sepia 10% and Raw Umber 10%.

I have the icarus board switched on and you can see how much easier it is to burnish - I use very little pressure, and the blending works really well. If you don't have an ic...

Bichon White Curly Fur - Part 1 November Focus - Pastelmat

Part 1 of the curly fur tutorial. I've included the eyes and nose as well as it's always good to have context.

I've used pastelmat board for this tutorial, it's all about soft curls so using the eraser to help create the highlights.

My Colour Recipes - Pinky Chestnut

The first in my colour recipe series - I've done a few of these before, but want to bring them in under this heading so that I can group them together.

Colour is so subjective, so I want to try to give you some ideas as to not only what colours to look for but how to use them and how to think about what might happen if you mix this colour with that colour.

A Hare Sitting Up Part 1 - November Full Tutorial - Lightfast Paper

This is part one of the Hare tutorial. I've created it using Derwent Lightfast paper, however you can choose whichever support you'd like.

I have used the Icarus Board for the background, but I've shown you the process if you're not using the icarus board - many of you I know will not have one.

Would I recommend the board? Well if you have the money available it's nice to have...

November's Focus video - white curly fur

I want to give some context to the tutorial, so bringing the face into it as well will help, this will be on white pastelmat, and then if I have time again on dark grey or I may just jump straight in with the dark grey - see how I feel tomorrow ;)

The nose area will be a fab tutorial on its own.

My Colour Recipes - extra monthly tutorial for all tiers

My Colour Recipes

I'm bringing this new monthly tutorial to Patreon starting in November.

Each month I will pick coloured fur or feathers and talk you through the process I go through to choose which colours I'll use. This will be more a theory type tutorial rather than a drawing one,  but I will try to really go in to depth - colour is very tricky to tea...

Who’s excited for November’s tutorial?

Making a start today. I’m actually going to use hot press paper with a background - the background I’m going to do some mini tutorials in different mediums so everyone has a chance to use what they already have hopefully. The main tutorial background will be done using the Icarus board for the background and just pure pencils for the hare 🥰 photo with permission from Sue Cross

Layering for beginners (and everyone else)

45 minutes, showing you how I start by layers, the reason why I do what I do, showing pressure, how to build up colour, and why tonal values are your most important part.

Breaking things down so that you don't need to focus on details straight away really helps, starting with texture helps to bring the details out quickly anyway without sitting trying to draw tiny hairs.

I like to g...

Layering for beginners (and anyone else ;) - intro

This is a short 7 minute video just as an intro to layering, deciding colours etc.

I'm not giving you the ref in this video due to it being a commission piece, it's more a video that you can watch if you wish and see how easily layering works if you break down the process.

You can use this method on any surface, with pastelmat it's much easier to get light over dark, but the princip...

Quick update - please do read

Good morning all, from a brightish Sunday morning here in Yorkshire :)

I'm sure you're all aware there have been a few changes to currencies and membership offerings recently, and I just wanted to make sure you had all the information as I know some of you have been a little concentred about the change in the currency.

Up until recently Patreon has only ever used the US Dollar for c...

The Patreon links page is purely for you to have easy access to my tutorials - the links, when you click on them, take you directly to the tutorial in patreon. You must make sure...

November's Focus tutorial

Now I was going to do dapples, and had a gorgeous ref photo, but I've just found out another creator is doing dapples this month, so I thought I'd put it to the vote instead - I know many people follow multiple Patreons and I don't really want to double up with the same subject.

November full tutorial

This handsome hare :) And I think I'm going to create the background as well! My feeling is that this will be on drafting film, but I may go hot press paper. I'd like to get the background and foreground in but it depends on how much time I have. This is a photo from Sueswildlife on instagram. You should have full permission to sell and create prints from your finished piece if you follow the t...

Weimaraner Puppy - Part 6 Pastelmat Board

This is the last part of this tutorial and I have to say I think one of my favourites.

23 minutes I talk about the important of understanding the process - how things can't possibly look amazing when you have only just started laying down your layers - so understanding that you have to work through those stages.

43 minutes Drawing the join on the left leg - important of hair d...

This looks interesting!

Has anyone tried it?

I've bought a pack of three to trial, below is the product description. Nowhere does it say it's archival or lightfast however, just that it's made with the same ingredients as colored pencils - so I need to have a search to see if there's any more information.

I bought mine from Etsy here's the link (it is from the USA): 2020-10-09 08:10:07 +0000 UTC View Post

Finished Weimaraner Puppy

This is the finished piece, scanned, and I've retouched the background as it will be a print. I'm hoping to get the rest of the tutorial up today - just two more videos to come :)

This is a fantastic tutorial for those wanting to really get to grips with light touch and subtlety -  less really is more in these cases :)
