Lots of work on tones here as we move down into the chest area - it's all about bringing parts of the horse forwards and pushing other parts back - plus the less is more concept - particularly on the hind quarters - just enough information!

Just a short video - less than 15 minutes - explaining the colours I've used for this commission piece. Mostly luminance, but some lightfast and drawings - all chosen for their soft colours and blending ability.
Golden Retrievers vary so much in colour, so this is just one idea for colour, you may need to go lighter for those more white coloured dogs, or add more orange tones for the dark...

I’m going to record part of colour layering of this gorgeous golden retriever as part of my colour recipe series. This colour, I think, is quite challenging to get - and I’m using a range of different colours.
I’ll be recording it this afternoon - just a short video, but will talk through the colour choices and why I’m using them.

Working on the ears and the start of the mane. I darkened the image half way through so that you could see a little clearer.

I know how frustrating Patreon can be as a platform - and I'm always looking for things to make it easier for you all.
So the amazing Lucy (with a little input from me) has created a members site especially for you all.
This is part of my website, so still separate to Patreon - Patreon is where you will view all the tutorials - but I am hopeful that this site will make things so muc...

I used a half sheet of white pastelmat board approx 14x19" and the head is around 9.5" tip of ears to bottom.
The reference photo, line art and the materials list are all attached below.
You'll also be very happy to hear that I am moving back to YouTube - I've listened to what you've said, and I am unhappy that Vimeo is not inclusive, s...

My two tutorials are starting to upload as of 7am tomorrow morning.
I have made the decision to move back to YouTube, after listening to your comments and realising that Vimeo isn't inclusive to those who need captions and subtitles.
I'm making some changes on my website to include a members area where you will be able to find the tutorials as usual, but also loads of informat...

Here he is :) AlakaZam - a study of a Smokey Cream Gypsy Cob.
I'm always asked to create white or pale animals on white as they can be the hardest to draw, subtle colour, shadows etc, and this study has it all :)
You'll learn how to create a realistic mane, that beautiful blue eye, the contrasting shadows and the soft subtle contours.
This video is the first of two of Al...

I haven't been doing any live drawings on youtube recently due to the amount of work I have on, but I've been doing live draws in my weekly Art Club over on the £20 tier.
I mentioned a while ago that we'd be doing this and many of you were interested, so here's the image we'll be doing :)
In December I am inviting all my Patrons, regardless of what tier you are on to join me ...

These are the two images we are using for the December tutorials.
They are both of AlakaZam with very kind permission from Kathy Russell.
Both have different qualities I want to concentrate on for the tutorial - the full body shot, because there's not a huge amount of tiny in depth detail it's going to be all about the tonal values and getting the muscle and bone structure cor...

a live drawing session for all the tiers coming up to Christmas and the holiday season? It would be quite a longish session to try and get the drawing done and finished - via zoom unless I have too many wanting to join and then it would be via youtube but exclusively for patrons. I was thinking (and I know it's a bit cliched, and also a couple of other patrons are putting out tutorials of one, ...

This is the final video in the hare tutorial.
I love this piece - I've had a bit of a battle with it to be honest, whether I like it or whether I should have gone more into tiny details, and I've decided I really love it and want to create some more similar - probably as originals.
This is from a photo by Sue Cross, please ensure you credit her and me when you post :)
