EARLY ACCESS ~ US

Us (2019) is Jordan Peele’s sophomore mic drop, where he took the expectations from Get Out and said, “Cool story, now let me give you something weirder, meaner, and way more unsettling.” What starts as a typical family vacation rapidly descends into a horror film that feels like The Twilight Zone got body-snatched by Dostoevsky.

At the center of it all is Lupita Nyong’o, giving a dual performance so damn good it should’ve come with a warning label. As Adelaide, she’s a woman trying to hold her family together, but as Red—her doppelgänger with a voice like a broken music box and a stare that could turn your bones into soup—she’s nothing short of terrifying. She carries this entire film on her back like she’s leading an acting masterclass from both ends of the spectrum.

The premise? Every American has a twisted, underground twin known as a “Tethered,” who dresses like a cult member, wields scissors like a slasher villain, and is very tired of living in the shadows. One day, they come topside—and all hell breaks loose.

Peele doesn't just want to scare you—he wants to unsettle you at your core. This isn’t about jump scares (though there are some)—it’s about existential dread, class commentary, and the terrifying idea that we are our own worst enemy, literally. The symbolism is layered like an onion dipped in trauma: Hands Across America, the rabbit motif, biblical references, the red jumpsuits—it’s all there for you to obsess over after the credits roll.

The supporting cast is solid (Winston Duke as the lovable dad is a particular standout), but it’s really Lupita’s show. And once that twist kicks in? Yeah, your brain’s going to need a minute. Or five.

Us isn’t just horror—it’s high-concept psychological warfare wearing a slasher mask. It's not here to comfort you. It's here to whisper, “What if the monster... was YOU?” and then leave you alone with your thoughts and a pair of gold scissors.
