Slug dimensions and submissions
Added 2018-12-21 20:50:03 +0000 UTCA few people have asked what the tolerances are for a slug they might want to fabricate and submit. Most people contact me through Facebook messages and I can pick their brains to see what they have. About 90% of the time, the people who say they will send us stuff never do. ( that's just the nature of the internet)
Some ideas I had to reject because they were ridiculously heavy (4 oz. ) or too large, too dangerous, stuff we have all ready tried, or were things I could just buy myself at the hardware store. I usually try to talk people out of submitting stuff because of high shipping costs.
Most people who have oddball commercial slugs we haven't tried send just the slug and any wad it may use. (always the case for overseas shipping). Some people have mailed us live shells within the U.S. Typically we don't need very many examples. Usually 5 is enough though 8 to 10 would give us more test shots. (and have enough for a few long range shots too) We usually just film for 2 to 3 hours and it is a very slow process, so you'll rarely see us shoot more than 8 slugs, just due to time constraints. In that time, we try to film at least 2 videos so we will have content to post through the week.
Preferably, for homemade slugs, we appreciate they are made exactly the same. Some people have sent slugs where no two were alike. It's difficult to keep track of which is which, and doesn't allow for any error. (maybe the design would have worked but because of a bad powder load, etc. it didn't work in one case)
I encourage people to make a short video of them fabricating the slugs, or even just talking about their submission, preferably in their native language. It doesn't have to be fancy or long or complicated.
That's about it. We are looking for unique stuff that we haven't tried before. There have been a few times where we were so back-logged that I have told people to hold off for 6 months and hit me up again. I try to get the stuff shot as quickly as possible so the people submitting the slugs don't have to wait forever to see their idea tested.

Do you have a 410-bore gun that you have access to as a test-bed? For many years I have worked up "triple ball" loads for the 410 and I know what patterns well out of my guns and how I have to setup the wad column to get them to pattern well but have no idea why it works and why the stuff that blows patterns blows patterns. Since these loads are basically the best that can be had out of a smooth bore 410 for hunting big game since its like shooting a load of three 410 ball slugs so its better then just a slug and the balls are much bigger then normal buckshot so its better then regular buckshot loads as well it might make for some interesting loads for you to do so high speed film of for others to view.

If I ever do have a good one come to mind I will keep the dimensions, weights and numbers in mind, and film the manufacture process. There is one target I would like to see you try sometime. It is one my Dear Ol' Dad used set up when I was a kid. I have done it several times for friends, and even seen it in an old safety film with John Wayne. It is a great demonstration of hydro static shock. It goes like this: 1. Take a flat steel plate and place it on the ground. 2. Put a large coin in the middle of the steel plate (My Dear Ol' Dad and I always used the old silver dollars, but they would be hard to find now. A 50 cent piece might work, though. The bigger the coin, the easier it is to find in the aftermath). 3. Put an empty 3 pound coffee can on the steel plate centered over the coin. 4. Fill the coffee can with water and put the lid on keeping as much water and as little air as possible in the can. (If there is a bucket of water or a pond handy, just take the lid off, submerge the can and put the lid back on while the can is still totally submerged). 5. Put another flat steel plate on top of the can. 6. Put a large rock or some heavy weight on top of the whole thing. 7. Shoot the can, dead center. When done with a .243 or a .30-06, the water pressure is so hard that the coin is imprinted on the bottom of the can. You should be able to read the date that the coin was minted from what was the inside of the bottom of the can. It's always a crowd pleaser, but I have never seen it done with shotguns, only high powered rifles.
