Wayne Martin on Joe Thompson

“Nowadays, when people play fiddle music, it’s instrumental,” Martin said. “But the older generation insisted on interweaving the vocals with the music. . . . The tunes actually had story lines. When you hear ‘Old Joe Clark’ at a bluegrass festival, it’s often sung as a funny tune, but in Joe’s version, Old Joe Clark ‘killed a man and buried him in the sand.’ It had a weight to it, and it was not frivolous.”

Clifton, thanks to you I'm working on my singing. I played different instruments growing up but never really learned to sing other than trying to sing to ty he radio. Now I realise most of my problem has been trying to sing in the wrong keys. By myself with my banjo there is no wrong key, just the one that sounds right. Now I just need to learn some real songs.😁

Is there an alternative scene?

I don't understand why the people in the current "old time" music genre quit singing. It doesn't make any sense. Furthermore, they have relegated the banjo to some kind of back up for the fiddle which has been elevated to the level of a god. Everything must revolve around the fiddle. Go to any old-time jam, any old time festival, and any old time banjo forum and you will see this philosophy. Who put these people in charge of anything? I will give the bluegrass folks some praise, at least they still sing.
