The lovely Milo is November's full tutorial. The materials list is below. I have used a lot of pencils - but - you don't necessarily need to - you need a couple of browns, black, blues and purples plus greys - I'd encourage you to pick colours you see.
The full tutorial will be uploaded from 2nd November, including the reference photo kindly given with permission from Elisabeth Erga, the ...

Well here he is - Milo - our subject for November on the $10 tier. Drawing on grafix drafting film, using coloured pencils for the cat and Caran D’Ache neopastels for the background. Everything is in real time and there are loads of techniques to get your teeth into plus of course the gorgeous lighting 🥰 from a photo with permission from Elisabeth Erga

Just thought I'd share this video clip taken from my phone of me creating a rough outline of the cat I'm using for my next tutorial. I've basically taped the film to my screen and drawn round with a 5H pencil.
I would usually use my projector, but for something like this it's actually quicker to quickly trace round the image on the computer screen.

I had to do this one before November’s as it’s a commission. But this is full of tiny details, rich colour and techniques for smooth things on the film. I’ve also used lots of different combinations of pencils to get similar colours so you can pick and choose if you want. This will be from the $10 tier upwards.

I know a few of you have asked if I can share my article if you're not a member of the SAA so here's a pdf of the proof for you to have a read - note the typo of my name! - this was a telephone interview so not written by me.
Hope you enjoy :)

I've updated my core pencil list - a list of pencils I use on a regular basis. Don't feel that you have to have all of these, if you have other pencils that you prefer i.e Prisma Colour Premier etc, then by all means use what you are comfortable with :)
I'm working with a coloured pencil distributor to create sets of pencils for specific animal fur/hair colours which hopefully will be ava...

Very proud and honoured to have been asked to create the front cover for November's Paint magazine, plus have my interview inside :)
This was the piece I used the hairdryer to create the background!
If you aren't already, then becoming a member of the SAA is, in my opinion, vital if you're an artists who sells any work, originals, commissions or prints. The benefits you get fr...

This is the video I took last night to try and work out how I was going to do the background for the cat tutorial. As you can see if you watch it - it's not particularly successful, but was useful as I now know that panpastel on drafting film doesn't really work - not if you want colour that's stable and won't wipe off. I used panpastels, fixative and I used the Windsor and Newton Pigment Marke...

I thought this might be useful for you, sharing my thought processes when starting a new drawing. What paper will I use and why, how will I create a background, the colour of the paper, and make of the pencils etc. This all goes on in my head before I start and a piece and actually as I'm in the early stages of starting. I have often actually started and then scrapped it and used a different su...

This is a bonus video for you all - I was teaching today and was asked if I'd help with colour picking for a big commission, so I asked if I could record the conversation and the screen. So here it is :) Five whippets, different colours, not the best photos but realistic for pet portraits. We chat through the colour choices and layering, this will be done on drafting film so the choices were ba...

I've attached the reference photo which is from Pixabay and the line drawing which I created using the Colorscape app.
