O, Wild Winter, vampires do not fear the cold.

Needed to work on something personal a little to decompress from client demands, so I colored in a sketchbook doodle. This has vibes I wanna be explore more in my art. The red smoke was a Creative Risk that works so well. It adds contrast AND brings out Alexis' eyes.

I am getting SO comfortable with rendering now, fuck yeah fuck yeah FUCK YEAH. I've tried so long to figure out a way to make it all fit together and it's WORKING. I'm a mad scientist, a craftsman, a MACHINE. WHOOT WHOOT.

realizing I run into trouble rending objects with a lot of open space/lack of details. Will have to work through that. Overall color aesthetics are out of my usual dark and moody wheelhouse. I hope I didn't faff it up too much.

Damn, this kind of texturing and shading is becoming like second nature to me now!
Anyways, I use pinterest as a resource, I used to use it for inspiration, but now I use it for reference and to find poses I like. REALLY helps as opposed to stabbing in the dark to come up with poses.

Rare that I do a chubby character, huh? Not usually my THING, but I do sometimes appreciate opportunities to play around with a different set of shapes for artistic reasons if not personal ones.
Colors on this character ALSO a bit more vibrant and colorful than my usual affair as well. So that new balancing act of complex vs. simple takes a little bit of a different form.

Rope bunny pt.2 layouts.

Scripting and doing payouts for the second half of Rope Bunny. As you can see, Ringa's boyfriend gets involved.
Thumbs are kinda my least favorite part of the comic process-- well, that's not true, but it IS the most mentally draining. Trying to decode the script into visual medium is both creatively stimulating as it is exhausting.
Trying to make sure that not only do events flow in a w...

Not too much to say about this one aside from the graffiti inspired name. This was a badge commission.

That simplicity vs complexity I was talking about before rears it's head here in a different way during the coloring phase. Those more open spaces are freer to be colored and rendered in my new more painterly fashion while the inky rendering of the boots gets a few touch ups at most.

I think I'm getting a feel for this.

Oh yeah, also this is a topless thief girl. WHOA.

YEEHAW, really pumped with how well this one came out. This was definitely an exercise in detial vs. simplicity which the balance of makes for a pretty compelling image. Also happy with how consistently I'm improving with rendering black clothes/leather.

Ah, it begins. The brainrot. This boy is a FREAK.

I am beyond pleased as punch with this one. The texture indicates his form very well. He looks so grabbable despite being in black and white. For real tho, it's nice to do more black and white commissions where I can focus more on my strengths as an artist and double down on line and form knowing that's actually gonna be the final product.

I thought the coffin shape to frame the figure would me a cool idea. And it was. Boo yah.

Honestly, I think I should go back to using less saturated colors. I think my PC monitor might actually desaturate colors a little compared to other screens so it might be best to compensate for that. My stuff definitely looks more saturated on my phone. We'll see.

I struggle with foreshortening, not like, actually pulling it off because I can pull it off. There's this weird urge I have to show off as much of the body as I can which can compromise the dynamic pose I was going for.
Did that happen here? No, but I was definitely feeling that pull. Also, I need to rethink my approach to hair.

State of the Gutter no.2

OK! First off, about the slack in uploads. I was dealing with some personal stuff that got in the way for a minute. Mostly emotional/social/health stuff. My arm got sore and I had to ease off it for a little while. it's feeling pretty good now tho!
ANYWAY, I've noticed a lot of dropoff in that time. I see people sign up and drop off all the time in general, so in order to keep patreon retent...

Ultramar color experimentation.

More Warhammer brain rot. I cut it off because I realized how much time it was consuming. As you can see, I attempted more painterly colors. With?? Some success???

Especially on the face area. I was giggling, like, actually giggling to myself when it was all coming together. How did I do that? I don't know if I can replicate it?

WARHAMMER!!!!!!

BEAKY! BEAKY! BEAKY! I couldn't help myself. The throes of hyperfixation has me in a tight grip. I had to make Warhammer 40k art. My inner child demanded it. My desire for joy demanded it.

I adore the look of beaked Space Marines. They're just little guys, man. All Astartes are my special little guys, but especially the beaked ones. I was channeling a lot of old school warhammer art. Esp...

I need to figure out what to do with client work where the client's sona has a lot of neutral colors. Neutral colors aren't bad at all. I need, however, to up my color game in order to make even neutral colors POP or at least look compelling.
I have a very comic book style, maybe I should look up tutorials for coloring comics and apply it my own stuff.
I feel like every other art descri...

More sharp Jhonen Vasquez inks mixed with my leather hatching and texturing. The sense of depth on the figure came out quite nicely, the pose did too but I felt stiff working on the gestures. Maybe I should do some more gesture studies in the future to help me loosen up.

Kept the colors flat, obviously. When I get refs with shading, especially soft shading, it was always frustrating. So I kept it flat here with corresponding color swatches displayed.
My on and off fascination with graffiti has definitely informed the "teeth" label lmao.

I showed this one to a colleague for feedback and they said it looked "grabbable". Interesting. Here I tried to apply the newest color approach. This time, the color serves and compensates for the lineart.
if there's lots of detail in the lineart, there's barely and shading or highlights. If there's areas where the line art isn't really occupying a ton of space, the shading becomes more fre...

NUCLEAR EMO COLORS

OK, here's the colored version of it, I mentioned how I felt like my colors "fight" with my lineart and it was becoming apparent to me as I was working on this piece. Not nearly as bad as it coulda been.
I decided to stay the course instead of scrapping the colors just to see what it would look like if I spent as much time as possible with shading and rendering.

Commission. Been giving colors and inks a lot of thought and came to the realization that my lines and my colors "fight" eachother. So, I eased up on line details where I plan for colors to do the work of indicating form and depth. The detailed and dark parts I'm going to leave more flat. We'll see how the final product looks.

Another big personal thing, I wish I could draw cities as well as some of my peers. Still, happy with the lineart and composition. Tried sprinkling in a few atomic age design elements to see how they play with Emo/Scene aesthetics. I'm not sure if they even register lmao.

Fairly pleased with the latex rendering here. I feel like I'm getting faster at flats, but slower when it comes to shading and rendering. hm. hm. hm. HM.

Putting my forays into thicker angular line art aside in order to work on this nsfw. MAYBE the think 90s lines can work with nsfw, what do you think?

REALLY feel like the new coloring is coming into it's own. I can't wait for the public to see my style evolve. Soft shading and hard angular lines might be something worth experimenting with more. We'll see.
