Underfoot (2023)

Mark and his wife, Cindy, had always been aware of their son, Cole's, unique fascination with shrinking. It all began when they discovered his teenage struggles with erasing his browser history. Now that Cole was an adult, they felt it was time to have a candid conversation with him about his desire to experience life at a miniature scale. Thanks to incredible technological advancements, the dream of shrinking was no longer confined to the realms of fiction—it had become a tangible reality.

However, life had thrown Cole a curveball, and he found himself moving back home due to financial constraints. In the spirit of compromise, Cole's parents decided that perhaps the most practical solution was to shrink their son, ensuring that the household expenses wouldn't have to change dramatically. To make the experience even more surreal, they had a meticulously crafted dollhouse commissioned, a perfect replica of their home, complete with functional lights and other essential components. Only the fridge and stove were non-functional, but they were present, adding to the surrealism of the situation.

Unbeknownst to Cole's parents, there was one facet of his fascination they didn't fully grasp—his attraction to feet. While they believed his interest was limited to the experience of being shrunken, Cole had always kept the foot aspect a closely guarded secret. It wasn't a matter of shame; he simply wanted to preserve that particular aspect of his fantasies for himself.

Most of the time, Cole found himself living on the edge of danger, as he often narrowly escaped being crushed beneath his parents' feet. The constant thrill was both enticing and terrifying.

However, one fateful day, as Cole was exploring his father's sandals, both of his parents descended to the foyer. Mark called up to the house, "Cole! We're going out for a while," and Cindy added, "We'll be back tonight with dinner." Unaware of their son's precarious position, they continued their casual conversation.

Desperation surged through Cole as he yelled up to his parents, pleading with them to wait. They remained oblivious, never glancing down to acknowledge his presence. A looming shadow enveloped him as his father's foot found its way into the sandal, the action a habitual part of Mark's routine. Cole screamed as his father's substantial sole pressed down upon him, settling into the sandal without a hint of awareness. Mark felt nothing but comfort as he adjusted his feet and left the house with his wife, assuming his son was safely tucked away in his miniature home.

The two parents headed to an event featuring a local band, and as Mark nonchalantly slipped his foot out of his sandal, Cole gasped for air beneath the partial reprieve. Desperate to alert his parents to his perilous situation, Cole attempted to call out, but the surrounding music swallowed his cries, leaving him isolated in his tiny world.
