I'm excited to announce the release of the latest update, v0.47.0! This update took longer than expected due to some unexpected setbacks, but I'm confident you'll find the new changes and improvements well worth the wait.
What's Been Going On?
Challenges and Setbacks
I had planned to update the game engine from Ren'Py 7.4.11 to Ren'Py 8.3.0 in preparation for the upcoming image generation engine. However, this turned out to be a much larger task than anticipated, with significant breaking changes that require careful handling. What I originally thought would be a quick afternoon task turned into a massive project. Therefore, the Ren'Py 8 update will be postponed to a future release.
Another major challenge was trying to fix the Android version of the game. Unfortunately, this too was more complex than expected. I’ve decided to wait until after the upgrade to Ren'Py 8 to reintroduce the Android version, as the current pipeline is broken by the changes.
The Good News
Now, onto the exciting part: what *did* work out!
Changelist
New Stats: I've added three new background stats—**stress**, **laziness**, and **gluttony**. These stats are self-explanatory and will add more depth to your character's development.
New Content: I’ve added **a few thousand words of new content** to the office job, utilizing the new stats. While the rest of the game doesn’t yet use them, this is a significant step forward.
Revamped Salary/Promotion System: The office job has undergone a major overhaul. Loyalty points have been removed, and now your salary can be increased through various factors: working harder (which increases stress), loyalty pay rises, promotions (which have specific conditions), and finishing college.
Office Job Refactor: This was a big one—I’ve completely refactored the office job into a more manageable architecture. Previously spread across three files, it’s now split into 25+, making it much easier to organize and understand, especially for modders.
UI Updates: The food club cafeteria and gym cafeteria UI have been updated to match the new design.
Improved Item Handling: Item handling has been adjusted to better account for thirst.
In summary, this update includes a ton of code improvements and a complete overhaul of the office job mechanics. Plus, for the first time in two years, I’ve added new stats, that have been overdue for a VERY LONG time. I had to get them started, and for the office job seemed like a wise, and efficient decision after all those refactorings.
Comments
It's a permissions issue. After downloading the game, your computer wasn't letting you run it because it didn't have permission. The command you just ran gives the necessary permission to open and run the game. I'm working on a permanent fix for this, but first, I need to upgrade Ren'Py. This is because changing this version might fundamentally affect how the game is packaged.

2024-09-06 23:39:24 +0000 UTCIn that case try following: 1. Right click on the application. 2. Select "New Terminal at folder". 3. At the Terminal command line, type "chmod -R 777 ." (make sure you type "chmod -R 777 ." including the dot, but not the quotes) If 3. does not work, try it with a leading sudo (you will need to enter your Mac's password in that case): "sudo chmod -R 777 ." 2024-09-06 23:20:30 +0000 UTCRen'Py 7.4.11, the software that Gain of Life relies on, does not yet support Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, etc.). I have been working on an upgrade to the newest version of Ren'Py, and thus adding support for M-Chips, but I failed last month, as this was a more complex step than initially expected. Regardless, I was able to upgrade the game in the meantime. With this month's version (v0.48) you should be able to play the game on your Mac again.
