I really adore how you're approaching this show. Sometimes people get so caught up in the messiness and horribleness of the lies that they discount the story as a whole (partially i think this comes from people only listening to the soundtrack and then getting caught off guard when they learn the actual plot). Personally though, I love how morally gray the characters are allowed to be and find the emotions and characterization all the rawer for it. Sitting in that discomfort of IS a major part of the appeal for me, even though I get why it turns a lot of people away from the show. On a heavier note as someone who has both had suicidal ideation and lost people to suicide I find a lot of the musical's commentary (especially in Requiem) about how people have this urge to sanitize loved ones after their deaths to be very powerful. And as someone who has lied in the past to cover up the extent of my own mental health issues and spare other people's feelings (though obviously never to this huge of an extent) I can't help but emphasize with Evan as well as he digs himself deeper, even as I recognize how wrong it is from the first lie
