DISCOVERY s3e11 “Su'Kal” & s3e12 “There Is A Tide…”

Matt and Andy discuss whether the Disco crew are the best and the brightest, or whether they should maybe stop debating whether every person who's sent on a mission should actually carry out that mission and just do their jobs.

Welcome to your Discovery pod, Lieutenants!  Post your Disco-related comments/questions from these episodes here for consideration for next month’s Disco pod!

Oh man, you guys are gonna LOVE the new season! *Kinda sorta not really a spoiler you wouldn’t have predicted yourself* You’re gonna be so surprised when ONE big thing happens and they talk about it for SIX episodes (thus far) and we still don’t know ANYTHING. My favorite.

Captain Randall of the Inside Strait (Jason Randall)

I think one of the problems with Disco is that I think Star Trek style plots are better suited for episodic TV versus serialized. We’ve now spent more time on the Burn and it’s cause than all of the Borg episodes for the entire run of TNG. When you spend an entire season on something, it raises the stakes so much that these solves or reveals just don’t land the same, especially when they are this bad. In TNG, we have one episode where it’s casually revealed that all of life is tied to an ancient alien that dropped its DNA everywhere. Imagine this plot line being dragged out over an entire season. It raisss more questions in the viewers minds and forces a bigger “So what?” to be answered. You can have an episodic show have a reveal like Saru and the kelpian tied to dilithium and it becomes “alright, cool” but when it’s the *season* reveal its like “ugh, does everything in this fucking universe revolve around discovery? This is ridiculous.”
