ENTERPRISE s2e9 “Singularity”

The crew are all acting like obsessive, prissy maniacs except for Reed, who's just acting like Reed.  Also featured: Tripp working on a chair!

Several years ago, I was dealing with vocal nodes that were causing recurring laryngitis. My SLP recommended avoiding glottal fry (as well as throat clearing and anything with menthol.) I have learned to crank the volume to the podcast on my drive to work so I can listen while ignoring the sounds of my own vocal warm up. 😄

Re: Vocal fry - As a person who had to go to speech therapy to correct it, it can be more than just a way of speaking some people don't like, it can actually cause physical symptoms from using the wrong muscles too much. In my case it caused so much irritation that I spent a good year of my life feeling like I had some sort of pill or piece of food stuck in my throat all the time. After stumping local (New Hampshire) ear, nose, and throat doctors I was sent down to Boston where a doctor at Mass General took one look down my throat and diagnosed it. Six months of speech therapy later, I was cured. Here's the test they had me take on the first day: hum one note for about five seconds, and see where you feel vibration. If it's in your nose/sinus/roof of mouth area, congratulations, you're doing it right. If it's in your throat (which was me on the first day), you're doing it wrong. I still have to hum my way through "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode every now and then to get back on the right track if I feel it creeping back in.

Dominic Keating was really tapping into some Star Wars imperial officer inflection when he was giving T'Pol the business.
