To the displeasure of some people he meets, Finnegin “Burns” Girnykin is a talker. Although that self-empowered charisma often gets him what he wants, it just as often leads him into danger.

Burns had talked his way into an escort job for a well-to-do merchant caravan. Unfortunately, that caravan would be attacked by brigands. When the fighting started going bad, he offered his loyalty to the attackers, who, tolerating him just enough to use him as monster fodder, took him as a prisoner.

The next day, the group brought Burns to use as bait when looting an abandoned town. Pushing him to lead the way, he was the closest to the rift that tore the air asunder. He was thus pulled in, and greeted by a voice speaking a language he didn’t yet understand.

Moments later, Burns leapt back out of the rift, charging an eldritch blast in his hand and wearing a chip on his shoulder. He dealt with his former captors, knowing he would eventually have to deal with his new one. But he also knew that he would need some allies to figure out how to do that.

When his pack was stolen by a small goat in a village a few days later, he didn’t think its owner would be one of the people to help him.
