Now they need to put on a show for people from all across the ninja world, and that sort of thing takes time to prepare. They also want to give them time to hone their skills and to practice for it.

I think he slightly suspected the things he said and calling it out with a "joke" is a win win because if its true then kabuto is thinking "fuck!! He's probably on to me I really shouldn't bestray him now, he is way smarter than I thought." or "fuck Orchimaru is scary" if he didn't have any intentions of betrayal and Orchimaru is fine with him thinking either one of those lol.
