The Best Out Of 16 Art Articles 🤩 - August Summary

Hey everyone!

One current issue we have on Patreon is how difficult it sometimes is for new patrons to catch up with all the content I constantly share here. So for today, since August is officially over, I thought it would be good to wrap up everything discussed during the past month in a quick summary. That way, whether you're new or not, you can decide what points to focus on.

1. Aug 1
Stylizing the 'Vibe': A Character Design/Illustration Technique
In this article, I focus on getting the vibe right in character design through three steps: shape, value, and color. Using bear inspired characters as examples, I begin with quick sketches for shape, then explore lighting and grayscale for mood. Color comes last, only after nailing shape and value. I end by saying that vibes are subjective, so it's okay if others see things differently.

2. Aug 2
Stylizing the 'Vibe' Part 2 - Outfit Design (Bears File + Process Video)
I talked about my unique approach to character design, learned at Riot Games, where I start with shapes instead of lines. I use the Limberto brush for initial sketches, making my work faster and helping me see how characters interact. I then pick outfits that vibe with each character's animal inspiration, like bears, and fine tune the design by adjusting values and blending modes. It's a different way to design characters, but definitely efficient.

Upgrading Past Content (Monthly Access) + New Brush Set!
I brought back a fan favorite article from 2021 about shading and values, updated with fresh insights. This one's locked now, but get on the "style seeker" pledge for monthly gems like this. Also, streamlined my brush set from 400+ to the crucial 8. No fluff, just the real tools I use to help you master your art.

"My Sketches Look Better Than My Final Pieces" - The Reason Why and How To Fix It!
I dived into why sometimes our sketches seem to outshine our final pieces. It's all about capturing that raw energy, and I gave tips on how to keep it alive even in polished work. We talked poses, facial expressions, and even how to handle non-organic objects. It's all about deciding what to keep sketchy and what to clean up without losing the essence. For those in the "Mastering Maestro" Tier and above, get ready for a deep dive into values and colors, complete with a video and PSD file.

Sketch, Shape, Story: How a Meme Inspired My Character Illustrations
I walked you through my creative process for bringing two characters—a raven and a cat—to life. Inspired by a meme, I focused on how to capture their unique dynamics through lines and shapes. It was all about keeping things rough yet effective, pulling from my recent "bear" illustration for technique. We also talked about the balance of strong lines with subtle colors and values. Oh, and a little redesign on the cat's hair for some extra edge.

Anatomy - From Static to Dynamic 3 Keys! + Exercise
I broke down the three main hurdles you might face when it comes to anatomy in character design: inconsistent proportions, static poses, and lack of depth. First, I gave a step-by-step on using geometric shapes as a foundation for accurate proportions. Then, I talked about how to amp up the dynamism in your poses, using tricks like line of action and balance. Lastly, I dived into adding depth through perspective and shading. There's a homework exercise at the end to help you put these tips into practice. Keep drawing; you've got this!

Composition: Balancing Four Characters - 'Gang Gang' Process & File
Went a little crazy with complexity, started with one character illustration and now I'm at four. This time it's not just about drawing four dogs; it's about telling a compelling story. Used big brush shapes and line art to get it just right. Focused on poses that capture each dog's "mood," and outfits that match their vibe. Worked in black and white to keep it simple. Wrapped it up with some top-right lighting for shadows. Check the PSD for more insights.

Animation Basics: Tips and Tricks for Beginners - IGUANA!
I went beyond my usual stuff. Instead of just drawing characters, I animated one. It's all part of pushing my art into areas some might avoid. While I'm not at my final goal yet, it's a solid step. I also dove into some fundamental animation tips: getting timing right, adding natural arcs in movement, and building anticipation for major actions. It's not just about making things move; it's about making them come to life.

9. Aug 16
Social Media Trends: Adapting Art Techniques for the Video Era (Process +File)
I tackled the shift to video content on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, influenced by TikTok. Shared how my animation approach multiplies my usual art process by 8, splitting into frames with unique lines, colors, values, and details. Discussed my detailed line art, focus on character shaping, and strategies to animate without redrawing the whole figure. Pointed out that although my detailing process is messier, it's still aesthetically pleasing to me. Ended by emphasizing the need for both skill and patience in animation.

10. Aug 18
Perspective & Color: Turning Dancing Birds into Teens
I shared the inspiration behind my teen characters based on TikTok lovebirds. Used color to define personality green and yellow for the energetic girl, blue and white for the reserved boy. Discussed body language, like the girl leaning playfully and the boy's shy posture. Talked about using one-point perspective for depth. In short, color, body language, and perspective make your art richer and relatable.

11. Aug 19
Animation Basics Part 2: Using Key Frames and Inbetweens for Fluid Movement
In this article, I shared how I animated two characters inspired by lovebirds. Focused first on shape differentiation, then tweaked the male's initial "military" theme to complement the female. Highlighted the importance of key frames and "inbetweens" for smooth movement. Concluded by discussing my choice for simpler outfits and the advantages of prioritizing animation over intricate details. Overall, found it demanding but rewarding.

5 Fashion Tips to Improve Your Costume/Character Design
In this article, I talked about merging fashion wisdom into character design. Shared artist tailored fashion tricks and daily exercises. Focused on using historical fashion, nature inspired colors, and mixed mediums for unique, layered designs. Also discussed cultural fusion and storytelling via garments. To sum up, these strategies enrich characters with depth, story, and culture.

13. Aug 23
When Cowboys Meet Astronauts: Blending Genres and Personalities!
I discussed how to mix cowboy and astronaut themes for a male character, inspired by a brown bull, and created a chip sharing cowgirl for the female, inspired by a black and white cow. Focused on theme mash ups, character expressions, and little details like belt buckles. Bottom line: animals can spark killer ideas in character design.

14. Aug 25
How to Build an Audience, Fix Flat Art & Improve Art Method - Discord Frequent Questions!
This article is about the challenges of translating vivid mental images into drawings, especially under tight deadlines. I advised embracing looseness in initial sketches and prioritizing through simplification. I also highlighted the importance of developing a workflow and exploring to better understand your own artistic journey. The main takeaway is that structured approaches and self-understanding can ease the translation from idea to paper.

15. Aug 26
Shapes & Values: Technical Keys for Shadow Twins (File + Process)
I delved into the process behind my "Shadow" character design, inspired by two cats on the street. Started with basic shapes using the "Limberto - Hard Shapes" brush, moved on to disruptive costume elements like multi strapped boots and a jacket skirt combo. Had challenges with balancing colors and values, particularly for the black character. Wrapped up with detailed finishes that include vibrant color splashes. Check out the video and PSD files for more.

16. Aug 29
Shapes, Values, Texture: My 3 Hacks to Make Real Hair Quickly
In this article, I broke down the art of crafting great hair in character design. I started with "Following the Flow," stressing that you should focus on grouped strands. Then, I talked about how "Vertical Shapes Project Horizontal Values," showing the importance of layering light and shadow for depth. I wrapped up with the smart use of texture, especially where the viewer's gaze lands. The goal is to up your hair game, and remember, practice makes perfect.

Conclusion
This is a provisional solution for content segmentation. Ideally, I think we should have a web-like list where you guys can search for specific keywords (like tags) and also have a navigation guide. I've poorly implemented this with the article pinned at the top of the site as a temporary measure while I work on a better solution. Thanks for your patience!
