#SundayRundown One of the unfortunate backstories that is minimized translating the game to the show is that of Kima (not a spoiler) When she helped Vox Machina battle the Chrome Conclave, she would talk endless shit to the evil dragons, defiantly saying “hers was bigger”. She isn’t kidding - she’s a Paladin, and her Oath is to the worship of Bahamut, Platinum god. Vasselheim’s leaders were confident they could withstand the Chroma Conclave because (among many others) the main temple to the biggest, strongest benevolent metallic dragon was based there. Kima belongs Bahamut’s faith, so she’s never scared of any dragons. Hers IS bigger.

OOOOOOoo and Raishan 🐍 with the classic GREEN DRAGON 100+ IQ play!!! The double cross at the exact last moment AND taking advantage of what the party knows about Dragons Lairs! NOBODY would expect Thordak to weaken himself and LEAVE his lair!?!?! Surprise MUTHAFUCKA! It’s much easier to trick people when they WANT to be right EVERYONE wanted a cool pull up moment where they build the army and pull up. Raishan 🐍 just had to let them.

#SundayRundown “An Asshole but not Evil” I love the character of Vex’s father in the show. It expresses the difference between a character being evil vs a conflict of interests. The twin’s father is a closed off person who, you could be tricked to think, is skin deep. But upon closer inspection we notice a few things. 1 — He’s probably a victim of loss, and internalized racism in elvish society. He constantly talks about the greatness of Elf culture and even called his own children “Diluted” in an episode. ‼️BUT‼️ this behavior is obviously in contradiction to his actions. He MARRIED and had kids with a HUMAN woman!! Something many high elves would see as foolish or even downright wrong. It’s like how Omni-man referred to Debbie as a pet! Why would an elf go through all the hassle of getting in a close relationship with a human woman and have kids with her when he KNOWS she’s living on dog years to him? Not only that, but even the KIDS won’t live as long. It’s quite possible their father will outlive all of them except maybe Keyleth. Why? Why when he knows he’s going to go through deep pain of loss soon? Because he loved her. So what happened? Why’s he an asshole? 2 — He’s an elvish politician. A figurehead where all expectations get set. And, upon looking at the lives of his people, he’s pretty good at it! He doesn’t want elves to get hurt, even if that means throwing everyone else away to Thordak. He’s a GOOD protector for his people. He’s so high up he has full control of their military! Every action he does is under such deep scrutiny and bias. Being in such a position, having a connection to a human wife other elves may see as questionable would call his judgement into question. Like a far right activist in the government being married to a trans person. Obviously WE know this is a stupid thing to care about… but not him. Especially not if he grew up in this system. So he had them live with her instead. …But she died. 3 — instead of throwing them out he had the twins come live with him! Obvious half-elves that would point many fingers his way. These feelings of pain mixed with the background of internalized racism in elvish society… so… maybe he was wrong? He did exactly what we see Vex do. He picked a part of himself and shut it out. And he fell in. He slipped. But you can see in how his new wife and child treat him that he’s always putting on a front when we see him. To them, he’s someone who lights up their face when they look at him. I wonder what a lovely person he was back in the day to have won over Vex and Vax’s mom? I wonder if he still is like that to his current one.

I love this episode. THIS is a major change in the show. I was like “ah this death will get some people” for a while… until they put the stone over his coffin. I was like “oh shit. Percy can’t lift that, ok this might stick.” Very good display of how to deal with character death in a show rendition. At the table it’s ALWAYS heart racing because you’re battling random chance. But in a show most people assume the worst thing they can imagine that would break the vibe won’t happen.

I haven't seen any of the actual Critical Role gameplay but my understanding is that they've really changed some things for the show (which I approve -- don't get me wrong). One of the most noteworthy effects of Percy's death is that suddenly that plot armor that the main characters have suddenly feels very brittle. I like that -- it feels that the stakes are so much higher now. The next episode is my favorite of all three seasons.

This is such a great episode, like the stakes are just rising. This show gives us many moods but I love when it decides to become epic. That's when this show rocks!

#Sunday Rundown: the show glosses over what happend to Grog's herd. In short, they got FUCKED UP by Umbrasyl (black dragon) and disbanded. Before The Herd of Storms attack Westruun, Kevdak subjugated another Tribe, the Rivermaw tribe. After Kevdak was killed they were allowed to leave. This left the herd with roughly 100 members going into the attack on Umbrasyl. It's hard to tell In the show, but in the campaign close to fifty members of the herd were killed by the dragon with ten to fifteen being crippled. Unable to effectively defend themselves, Zanror ( Grog's cousin) decided to join the Rivermaw and disband the herd of Storms. They probably could have helped but not much. P.S. the battle plan was more complicated in the campaign, but simplified to save animation budget. Someone else can add full details.
