Episode 160: Snakewives

Cursed Child reading wrap-up episode!

With our reading complete, we take some time to discuss our overall thoughts on the play before we embark on our Very Real journey to See It In Real Life! What worked? What didn't? What did other reviewers think at the time? We check in with a mix of coverage from our rogue's gallery, and then another article illuminating some of our questions about who worked on what during the writing process. This also leads us to, in real-time, stumble into a discovery that drives us mad.

(Also, if you don't want the end of The Good Place spoiled for you, we riff on that for about 3-4 minutes when it comes up at about the 45 minute mark if you want to skip ahead!)

also sorry for third comment!!! (patreon mobile site PLEASE get a better interface for comment section Challenge). Once again I am asking (not rly but also… you know… rly) doing an Ace Attorney deep dive would be INCREDIBLE as either main episode or common room content. BC honestly the range of media within the franchise is huge!! So definitely space to make interesting comparisons. But also it’s just objectively better and MUCH more fun than HP. Similarly rabid fanbase too (I know bc I am one) that weirdly skews incredibly young in some parts that I still truly don’t understand how? since the games originally came out (outside of Japan) when I was in high school (around the time I was getting lied to about secret sims careers iirc). So not sure where all the hordes of 13/14 year olds came from, just like how weird that is to me with Harry Potter. Tho HP is at least very much more a kids book/movie franchise. AA I guess isn’t… NOT for kids, but not sure on market demographics and how it works out, and not sure I see comparative appeal for like… a 10yo. But anyway. All this to say that there are in fact… FOUR different official stage plays (one is a retelling of one in-game case; haven’t seen it yet but I believe the plot is changed quite a bit so it isn’t the exact same storyline, just not sure of the extent). There is/was another one in the works, I believe the original creator/writer of the games (Shu Takumi) was involved with it… but due to covid it got cancelled? Or delayed??? But there has been a lot of :/ :/ feelings from fans that I have seen about it regarding some plot elements within it (only seen a summary of a summary on it, but sets up potential romance feelings between two characters that is definitely a bit Icky due to ages, the fact that they have a very assumed sibling kind of friendship… and the fact that the main romance/love interest for Phoenix IS Edgeworth for the majority of the fans (and honestly was deliberately written that way if not explicitly canon) and this implied feelings is het, with the other character popularly being shipped with other girls. Tho unfortunately I think a large part of the fandom do ship (to some extent) this pairing (and from the numbers I have seen, those fans skew overwhelmingly cishet male) So even tho idek if this play ever got performed publicly/officially, it is already quite controversial due to… stoking up shipping wars perhaps, as well as potentially going back on things that the writers have either said explicitly in canon or in interviews or implied… BUT what adds another layer to this (and why it’s so interesting as a comparison to cursed child) is it also involves some kind of weird alternate timeline?? parallel universe?? time travel?? plot device for the whole thing. So some people have said that this romantic feelings subplot is actually caused by that and the narrative overall is very clear on it being “these are alternate versions of the characters and this would NEVER happen and is just a funny what-if scenario” and others don’t see it as such. Absolutely NOT A CLUE how it shakes out in the actual play. But directly comparable in many ways?!!!! The two plays I have watched (they’re all on YouTube and are subtitled), Turnabout Spotlight and Turnabout Teleportation are great fun. IDK how enjoyable for anyone who hasn’t played the original trilogy (for spotlight) or at least the first ace attorney investigations game (for teleportation) but I had fun watching them. There are also the musicals (can’t remember how many… maybe two??? Or three?? At least two.) by the all-female troupe of performers. Haven’t seen them, they also get rave reviews though from what I’ve seen.

Also, since I’ve never watched any of the FB films, beyond vaguely seeing some bits of the first one when someone else was watching it… I spent the entire last twenty minutes of the show SO confused bc I thought that the malediction thing was also what Ariana Grandedore and Credence(??) were. And I literally CANNOT remember what term they are for their specific cursed magical pathology but honestly. Was like “well it makes sense that there are different forms since ariana died young (tho that was bc wizard Hitler and his boyfriend killed her I guess) and I guess that Credence can turn into a phoenix?? maybe?? Don’t even know if that is theory/speculation or fact. But yeah… with that (whatever it is called), the maledictus thing, the way werewolves are (tho admittedly that’s just… how werewolves are throughout all depictions, the treatment of them within the HP world is… suspect as you’ve discussed)… sure seems like Jo’s next favourite thing after transphobia and family trees is “dangerous blood/brain diseases that probably aren’t the people who have therm’s fault but gosh they sure are Bad and Dangerous and Harmful hmmm. stigma is good sometimes actually” which is really just. super. thanks jo.
