I believe this episode marks the first appearance pf the Springfield Isotopes, consistently the Springfield baseball team, although it comes up less often than you think. They are mentioned in passing a lot, but their next major plot significance is in season 12's "Hungry Hungry Homer", in which the team almost moves to Albuquerque. When real life minor league team the Calgary Cannons moved to Albuquerque in 2003, they renamed themselves the Isotopes in honour of this. Their stadium even features statues of those yellow freaks we love.
This is the first thing to potentially ever get me interested in sports.
