I’m harder on Damon because Stefan may have forced Damon in that moment but don’t forget that Damon was ready to turn for Katherine and let his brother die while he lives happily ever after, forever…..Damon was selfish too & immediately turned on Stefan when his brother was clearly crashing out when they turned. Damon has been nothing but a bad brother while being 7 yrs older & fully cognizant. Stefan was not only young/easily manipulated but he was also being compelled then when he turned he clearly had an unnatural (by vampire standards) addiction to blood….then you also have the fact that up to this point, we haven’t seen Stefan do anything as bad as Damon has done (raping Caroline). It’s kinda hard not to think about that even if the show glosses over it. His yearning for Elena is also weird asf to me and reaffirms why he’s a bad brother. Like why & how are you lusting after your brother’s girl? That’s not cute to me at all. I really don’t see how it’s cute to anyone. And he’s saying he’s not gonna be selfish but he continues to lust after her and doing the most to position himself as an option for Elena. His words are wind.

Private selflessness is honestly truer than show-y selflessness. Reminds me of people in the south known for appearing sweet and nice on the outside but are truly assholes, and people up northeast known for appearing like rough assholes but will go the extra mile for a stranger lol. People forget what an asshole Stefan with humanity is when drinking human blood, and also the fact that Damon isn't operating with his full-on humanity switch, hence his being able to not care when needing to get something done. Both characters care deeply and experience guilt and pain. One shows it via brooding and lies about his self-image to cope/deal, the other copes/deals via jokes and depressing down their humanity switch. And both deal with it via bourbon LOL Damon didn't refuse to apologize for killing Jeremy until forced to. People have to be ready to confront and apologize for things. And it's ok if that takes them a minute (Stefan proves that this episode, it taking him 145yrs to apologize to Damon). That's not the same as refusing to.

Damon’s humanity isn’t the same as Stefan’s not because he’s “bad” but because his trauma, past mistakes, and PTSD have shaped him differently. Damon has carried so much pain people usually forget this, being tortured, abandoned, and losing people he cared about over and over etc. His darkness isn’t just “being bad,” it’s the result of a lifetime of trauma and survival in a brutal world Damon’s struggle is harder in many ways because he’s constantly fighting the fear of losing himself, of hurting those he loves, and the guilt that haunts him. That fear sometimes makes him push people away or act in ways that seem selfish, but it also makes his moments of vulnerability and love even more powerful. He’s not perfect far from it but his humanity is raw, real, and sometimes messy. Stefan’s “humanity on full” is easier to admire because it’s more controlled and more relatable to real world morals. But Damon’s humanity is nuanced, complicated, and wrapped up in instincts and trauma responses. That complexity makes him just as worthy, if not more, of respect and love. you have to look deeper than just surface level morality. Damon’s journey is about learning to accept his darkness while fighting for the good inside him and that battle is every bit as heroic as Stefan’s. Damon isn’t less human; he’s human in a way that’s harder to face and understand he is essentially the darker side of humans which exists and IS REAL and that makes his story, and his love, just as amazing. I agree with Mair and Sophie I don't like the simplistic viewing of "Stefan is good" that doesn't excuse everything he's done same as Damon. The main difference I see is Stefan got his humanity back first at the start but he isn't just good iykyk, the whole series is Damon finding his own way back Stefan just got there first. They are a lot more alike than people like to admit

That part!!! I hate when people act like Stefan doesn't own up to his selfish moments or own up to his problems with blood. He always does and he was always honest about it with Elena too. He told her the backstory of how he became a vampire, who he had to feed on to become one (his dad), how bad his thrist gets when he's in that mood. When Elena came to his house to talk to him in 1x19 episode, he literally told her that the blood turns him into a "monster, a predator and it's who he is". Damon fans like to skip over all that he told her and make it seem like he was never honest with her about it and that he "hides it" from her when he never did.

You know watching this for the first time in 2015 when I was a freshman in HS I was always rooting for Damien to have the scale tipped in his favor. Rewatching this as someone in their mid 20’s and has dealt with many women and ppl who I thought were friends, I just empathize with Stefan. My brother or homie should know the code we guys live by. And then I realize these brothers are vampires and their morality is gone along with their humanity so I shouldn’t have expectations for their behavior.

The love that Damon offers is as deep as an ocean. I’ve never seen any character like Damon Salvatore with such profound understanding of love. The love that Damon offers comes from the highest place of sacredness and unity that only selfless and unconditional love exists where you literally become one with love itself and just give your love freely and purely only for the sake of loving without expecting anything in return. It’s about seeing the smile on her face even if he’s not the one making her smile. That scene between Damon and Elena made me fall in love with Damon character with no return and touched the deepest part of my soul in ways I can’t explain. Damon stole my heart on that day and he’s been keeping it ever since. That’s how much I was moved by his golden heart because his understanding of love is extraterrestrial and of higher dimensions and definitely not of this world.

During that conversation in the car, and the hug right after they saved her from Elijah. He couldn't hold it in any longer and just wanted to say it out loud once...and I love that scene so much, very well executed. You have to remember that the audience gets to see a side of Damon that he doesn’t show to literally anyone else. Whatever moments of vulnerability we see from him are almost always private. He’s largely an asshole to everyone he meets, quick to violence, and comes across as completely remorseless for his bad deeds (Eg, he refused to apologise for killing Jeremy until his back was against the wall). So you can’t blame the other characters for seeing him as a wholly bad person when that’s all he shows people.
