That’s why even though Aerion is an asshole and Maekar thinks the whole thing is stupid, he feels he has no choice but to fight for him to keep him alive.

Their family’s PR is in the mud, that’s why the King Daeron sent Baelor and Maekar to attend this tourney. They were trying to fix the image of the Targaryens, and Aerion basically fucked it up. It’s part of the reason why Baelor chooses to fight for Dunk.
