A nice curiosity, Bakemonogatari is the anime with most sales in Blu-Ray ever. The other Monogatari seasons are also up there. It's a show and novel kinda hard to handle for western people, but in japan is basically considered a masterpiece. Nissio Issin, the guy that wrote the monogatari series is basically a master of the kanji and the japanese language as a whole, the amount of word play that this series has is insane. There are japanese teachers that makes doctorate on those novels hauhauhau A lot of the word play is very meaningful to the plot, they explain the most important ones really well to everyone understand, though. I gotta say becausa I don't think people have warned you yet, this show has a lot of uncomfatable and questionable scenes, I do think you really have the maturity to handle those, but it's nice to know that because the narrator of the story( the point of view from Araragi) that we get can really show things in a exaggerate perspective, that's why those scenes are going to exist.

So that probably gave him the base for his knowledge, the rest you'll have to see for yourself. By the way the show will fairly consistently refer to the characters by their family name rather than their given name, and the same goes for the fans. Its not an issue to use Tsubasa, Mayoi or Hitagi but both the show and people in comments and such will generally say Hanekawa, Hachikuji and Senjougahara instead.
