ol' mcDonal' had a (bit)farm

One of the projects I'm working on this summer for pocket money is illustrating a study on data-centers and their impact in cities!

Be it an impact on citizens living near a super noisy bitfarm (bitcoin data-center) and it driving them mad, or data-centers giving cities a financial boost when purchasing land or electricity, or their (ever growing) impact on the environment...

The researchers wanted to spruce up their research paper with more personalized drawings rather than just photos, to make it more pleasant for readers' eyes. I thought it was a great idea! So here I am, drawing data-centers, town halls, and maps this month, things I've never drawn before and didn't think I would :)

I usually stick to my own projects, my own comics, but the subject is one I believe important: studying data-centers' different impacts and vulgarize the results found. I think more people need more ways to understand exactly how it all works! So we're aware of how we can use the internet in a more intelligent, and less wasteful way.

BTW, those are really nice illustrations. Fantastic job!

Our biggest issue with data centers here in Iowa is the water used for cooling. Enough to push some areas into drought conditions. And there are data centers all around Des Moines. Locals are now starting to realize this and are making noise about it.

Yay!

I'll ask :)

Agree, I wear glasses I dont need 8kUHD 3dVR cat videos

The drawings look amazing and im happy to hear wonderful people like you are helping everyone learn about this better. Still I wanted to say a joke “remember hoarding those 20 year old emails keeps the Taos hum alive”. Sorry for the pun,I am writing up something to learn about data cleanup. A couple billion emails deleted will help our internet

(My humble knowledge) Not only that, the workload increases every time a coin is minted, thus exponentially increasing the amount of process power needed. That is why some are voting to change this process and others are doing coins based on different workings

Also, Crypto mining needs to be regulated so the people/companies doing this use more residential solar/residential wind power.

Casey R Smith

I second this.

Casey R Smith

Crypto mining, only way it will work is if person has own energy like from Solar being most common. I sill hate the practice.

These look amazing! Great job! :D

If people really understood how much power just the global internet infrastructure sucked up, and then how much _more_ bit-mining and AI training engines suck up... how bitcoin miners are basically putting small towns in a hostage situation, where the miner owns the means of electricity production... I think there'd be a lot more push toward regulation. (And I work in the global internet industry, for one of the largest network providers in the world. We need better solutions.) Love that you're helping with this project.

An interesting change from Pia & Company which is rather low-key,technologically except for her gaming / web design (?) equipment. I like the atmosphere, it's not just architectural renderings.

If you are able to, contract-wise, can you share the study or link with us when it's published? I'd like to see that!

Michael Steamweed

We obviously love the Internet so some data centres need to exist, but they do not need to grow uncontrolled.

Yes, in Ireland we have the data centre argument be that since our climate is relatively cool it takes less power here to cool them than in a hotter country. And sure, I can allow that, but the electricity they need is still enormous and the energy grid is just not set up for that. Also they all insist on back up generators which run on gas.
