Episode 8: Live and Let Die

You knew it was coming, you knew we would get to it.

It's the Racism One. During the production of Diamonds Are Forever they chose to adapt this Fleming novel next literally as a reaction to the Black Panther party gaining popularity.

We couldn't take on this one alone, so we called in Writer and all-around excellent guy Christopher Caldwell-Kelly to run us through just what the hell was going on when they made literally any of the decisions they made

Episode 8: Live and Let Die

Comments

Dev has clearly never tried to find a corn snake that has gotten loose in a room. They are actually extremely stealthy by default.

That wasn't a Cadillac- that was a Corvette in Cadillac Eldorado bodywork! Built by the same guy who did the Superfly Eldorado, Les Dunham. The Corvorado- what a timeline. I love it but hate the idea of a C3 Vette and an Eldorado being destroyed to build one

I was reading about fashion and colonialism when I actually remembered something from this episode of the podcast. Looked it up and sure enough, in the villain confrontation scene before he dies, Dr. Kananga looks like he's wearing a Kariba suit. A suit worn by Michael Manley in the 1970s and a number other Caribbean leaders as an alternative to the western suit and "a visual symbol of decolonisation."

I have always hated that part where he tricks Solitaire into having sex with him and I'm so glad you brought that up. It was later that I realised that this film was also racist af.

Why don't you ever mention who made your excellent theme music?

TBH, You Only Live Twice should've been a 7 in Cultural Insensitivity, so Live and Let Die could get the coveted 8. As insanely orientalist YOLT was, it didn't go that extra mile LaLD and Goldfinger took to get their 8s.

Living the dream.

i love the roger moore hatred, i hope it continues

Have a vague memory that Alice's podcasting nook is too small to possibly accomodate Chris on her podcasting microphone but am choosing to forget it in favour of the belief that he is actually on a very good quality mic and just sounds that bitcrushed out of his real life mouth.

Devon's righteous hatred of Roger Moore is something that probably shouldn't give me as much delight as it does, which is quite a lot. I look forward to seeing if your opinion of him changes after his first two films, because he does get noticeably less reprehensible starting with The Spy Who Loved Me. Anyway, another very funny episode! You've made me morbidly curious about this film, or at least more than I was already.

Assassinated, Cajun-style. Whooo-eee!

J W Pepper is the Jar Jar Binks of James Bond; somebody somewhere thought he would be fun, but he only exists to ruin scenes

in response to Amazon buying MGM, I present a bit: now pay attention 007. at first glance, a simple bottle of Tango, but simply piss into it and it becomes a toilet

A friend once when going into the old BBC broadcasting house encountered Roger Moore on the way out. The following event occurred very briefly but is absolutely true: He trapped Roger Moore in a revolving door.

What's that, Roger Moore? You wished you were acting when you were Bond? You're not alone.
