Episode 9.5- Rising Sun

If I had a nickel for every movie I've seen where Sean Connery becomes a Japanese, I'd have two nickels, which is not a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

Finally, Devon satisfied my constant itch to scream how after WW2 it's keiretsu, not zaibatsu when i read any old cyberpunk. Also, very special listen while I'm working in an actual keiretsu lol

Thank you for such a fun review of such a bad film

Sublight Monster

connery telling the black guy who was ~30 years old at the time, who would have grown up in a segregated america that the japanese have their own society inside america is a profoundly dumb line that snipes should have responded "No shit you idiot"

oh my god okay so i'm relistening again and i also *just* finished reading ecology of fear by mike davis, which has a chapter about the ways los angeles is destroyed in literature and movies, and i'm going nuts that he didn't mention either the book or the movie of this! because one of his points is that a HUGE amount of los angeles-specific disaster fiction, from its inception in 1909, is absolutely OBSESSED with asian and often *specifically japanese* invasion/infiltration/domination, and that this *doesn't go away* after ww2. (may be relevant that one of the groups that pushed the hardest for japanese internment was *white farmers* because they wanted to do a land-grab of japanese-american owned farms -- the fear of economic domination/out-competition of whites by specifically japanese people has, just, an astounding history in california.) other thoughts: the line about business as war by other means reminded me of the murder of vincent chin, which happened a decade before the movie came out—he was a chinese american who was murdered in detroit by white men who blamed him, as an asian, for the decline of the american automotive industry. just in terms of like, the shit this economic yellow peril rhetoric has done in the real world. & also, about the black guys in crenshaw who help wesley snipes: the book was published about 9 months after lapd officers brutally beat rodney king, though several months before the trial and the subsequent uprising. the movie came out a little more than a year after the uprising. (oh my god and the no-knock raids, jesus christ, he was doing no-knock raids under daryl fucking gates.) none of these men would ever talk to him in a million years. anyway read mike davis if you want to learn lots of things about los angeles and southern california more broadly that will make you go fucking insane

God's Eepiest Soldier

The one thing that baffles me the most is that this film somehow got Toru Takemitsu to do the score. This man has worked with Kurosawa, and they somehow got him to make this racist piece of shit!

Benjamin

Hi, im Scottish businessmans kid who learned Japanese at school because he thought the Japanese were going to take over the world. Just saying glad theres a podcast that FINALLY has my niche representation

August

Shame we never got the revival sequel where Connor becomes a koreaboo and discusses the power of mandatory military service, BTS/Blackpink supremacy, the idea of pop culture “armies” infiltrating the West, and an uncomfortable reference to LA rooftops.

ZanraiKid

Did some quick research to find out who the actress was; her name is Tatjana Patitz, a Bond girl name if I've ever seen one.

Clark Schaefer

FYI the currency of cyberpunk 2077 is Eddie's aka Euro-dollars aka the euro before the euro was a thing

Lisa Croxford

Would Blackhat count as a "movie like this" about China? I feel like it isn't, because Michael Mann is just too good a director to play into the naked racist stereotypes (and China isn't portrayed as particularly supernaturally hyper-competent in it). He's not good enough to stop Chris Hemsworth from doing a god-awful American accent for no earthly reason, though. Seriously, the guy could just be an Aussie in the film; it wouldn't make a fucking lick of difference to the plot.

Brian Taulbee

I have to issue the world's most pedantic correction and say that NuYen is the currency of Shadowrun, Cyberpunk being based off of a game made in the 80s when we thought the EU was going to take over the world, has Eurodollars as its currency.

Nathaniel Todd

I realized, listening to this, that my brain has conflated Rising Sun and Disclosure into the same movie (probably to save space). They're both based on Michael Crichton best-sellers, they both stared over-the-hill male sexpots, they were both clearly terrible when they were released and both hinge on faked/doctored video at a level we still can't produce today,

Robert Young

That moment where you all do the Chamberlain Skeksis’ “mmmmMMMMmmm” at the same time is just *chef’s kiss*.

Brian Taulbee

I won't be lame and link it but I've been going over this thing for months. Each chapter is more bizarre than the last and the racism gets weirder and weirder as they ascribe motives of inscrutable Asian treachery to every normal ass thing Japanese people do.

Moira

Oh shit, I'm currently doing a Let's Read of this awful, awful book.
