Episode 11.5- The Name of The Rose

In this episode, we are joined by medieval historian Dr Eleanor Janega to discuss the Old Man Connery era film 'The Name of The Rose', a film loosely adapted from the book of the same name and set entirely within an abbey in europe. There's some monks or something and a surprising amount of straight up filmed noncery. Cool!

Episode 11.5- The Name of The Rose

Comments

During the interwar, Italian communists dug up this old, weird heresy and used it for propaganda purposes ; as a "see ?! You can be christian AND hella commie, there's precedent !" thing ; because of course Italy in general is Super Catholic. And then, when the fascists took power, they made a point of digging up the one memorial of those guys, executing it by firing squad, then burying it again. So that's why it's in the book (and movie).

OK, so, love Dr. Janega's commentary EXCEPT the bit where she says the Dolcinians weren't a thing. Because not only WERE they a thing, Eco put them in the book for a very specific, antifa reason.

i know this has been pointed out & that i'm doing it many months late but: the dulcinian movement was real, it existed for only a few years and was entirely localized within piedmont which may be why dr. janega hadn't heard of it. they were part of some pretty fascinating social-religious-economic phenomena centered around the franciscans in northern italy before pope john xxii *really* brought the hammer down on the poverty-of-christ debate a couple years after the novel/movie is set. f's in the chat for the apostolic brethren and the joachimites as well

God's Eepiest Soldier

I'm pretty sure the thing Bernardo Gui lands on isn't a torture instrument, but a hay rake.

Y’all just made me figure something out about myself… I’m usually pretty okay with other trans people making kinda irreverent jokes and reclaiming slurs. But “he/him bussy” made me bristle. I think that’s because in general, most of the jokes I hear on videos or even this podcast are from trans women about trans women. Being a trans man, hearing bussy makes me feel dysphoric… But my rational brain was like “No they joke about this to relieve the pain” and I decided not to comment about not saying it and instead learned that if I’m okay with Abby making jokes at her own expense, I should also be okay with hearing bussy. Hearing these words in a trans friendly space defangs them… And that’s important. That way, if a cis person uses them earnestly it’s easy to laugh off. Anyway 10/10 podcast. Catching up on all the stuff I missed. Cars 2 episode made me piss.

I'm glad Alice was there to advocate for the book

Eleanor says that Dulcinians were made up but they were actually a real heresy? I was very confused by this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulcinians And yeah they were pretty based.

I watched the name of the rose during a high-school class... Why I do not remember. Also, another great book: The Judge and His Hangman (Der Richter und sein Henker) which I think makes a good point, how knowledge is also part performative. And how you can 'logic' your way into a conclusion, if you know the conclusion beforehand.

Name of the Rose (book) is an unbelievably funny take on modern epistemological crisis. ALL my sympathy is with Alice here. Read the book.

I just had the startling realization that I have seen this entire movie on TV, and I was probably 9 at the time

Liz and Ash in Florida. It's very hot! Climate change will kill us all.

READ THE BOOK! I ❤️ Umberto Eco so much. The Name of the Rose is a fantastic book and the film is really quite crap (though I have to admit I quite liked it when I first saw it as a kid in the early 90s…not so much now…)

Next Bonus. The episode's recoded babey, it's arrival is unstoppable

Kill James Bond!

Oh god... The Avengers... it's one of the very few films I walked out of. In fact I think it's the single worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Offensive to all six senses.

James Knapman

This is the finest intro bit yet, without a doubt.

Movies like this is why I like to watch films at double speed in VLC, and I'm still angry that I wasted an hour and a bit on it. 7.7 on imdb? I.... do not understand. Though if you're gonna do bad Sean Connery movies, you ever seen The Avengers? xD
