S3E25.5: KJB Q&A #10

Recorded just moments before our Johnny English Live Shows, we pull down the curtain and get a little bit real. Finally, we're breaking our silence on the following questions: Whats the best type of Dog? What's our fancast for a Zardoz remake? How did we feel about I Saw The TV Glow? And finally- What did James Bond dot to that guy?

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. They deserve to survive.

I just listened to a playlist of all the Bond theme songs in order and I’m pleased to find that November and I agree that For Your Eyes Only is the best one. I also think it’s the one you could most plausibly do a queer reading of.

lousullivan.bf

On the topic of films that are out of our depth but would be excellent for this podcast: “Wadjda”, the first full length film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia AND the first female directed Saudi film, its a girl’s coming of age movie set in modern Saudi Arabia and has a lot to say about Saudi patriarchy and how it’s both reinforced and discretely dismantled. I watched it for my ME&NA Studies class and it’s honestly a really well done film and really insightful.

A Goblin

Speaking as a person for whom KJB *was* my Pink Opaque, I have to say that my first step was pledging enough to get the bonus episodes, but not enough to be eligible to have my name in the credits. I knew I didn't want that (yet). I played it on repeat in my reverse-dysphoria woodworking dungeon. I replayed and re-replayed the episode that told me to just transition, so it could give me permission. It's been two and a half years since I came out, and as the machinery of the world aligns itself against us, I am understandably distraught and terrified, but only because I finally have a life I'm afraid to lose. I finally have a life worth living! And I can point directly to your podcast saving my life. Things will be more difficult this way, admittedly. But I'll be alive the entire time, and I've already received happiness, contentedness, joy, and love in abundance. So regardless of outcome, regardless of anything yet to be suffered in my future as a direct result of transphobia, I have already exceeded my hopes for a happy life, because up to that point I didn't truly know what happiness was, *at all*.

Maeve Victoria Roth

For No Notes Only

RIP Officer DeeDee Megadoodoo

You guys should do “Lucky Numbet Slevin” for heist season because it is fucking bizarre, has Lucy Liu, josh Hartlett, Morgan freeman and Ben Kingsley in it, and no one has watched it.

Charlie Banwell

1) oh my god Bound 1996 for heist season and 2) i'm a disability studies PhD student and I'm dying for some material about disability and trangression/deviance in a lot of the films you've discussed and have touched on re deformed bond villains. I do cultural studies/textual analysis/literary criticism about lesbians and pain and have definitely been considering some scenes/entire films you've covered in my dissertation. I'm biased, but the documentary code of the freaks is a really fun entry point to disability studies film criticism !!

corbin outlaw

Look forward to it, don't forget the stinger on the prequel, it's a small but dense capstone for what I think most spy movies have to say about ideology. Thanks for the show, it's nice to have a break from things and get a good laugh in.

Bilbro T. Baggins

Kingsmen is a series of three movies, so we're holding it in reserve for potential live shows

Kill James Bond!

You honestly might have saved my life with this one

Kill James Bond!

Devon, the letter Ain gave me trouble for a while cause I didn't understand the instructions I was being given ("like an A but you're being strangled"). The thing that finally clicked was realizing it's an Arnold Schwarzenegger noise, like one might do in an impression after "get to da choppa" or "come on, do it! Kill me!"

-Kris-

Just occurred to me that The Anderson Tapes is a heist movie. Stars Sean Connery and a strikingly young Christopher Walken.

TieDyeMike

Oh, I didn't ask if a Trillbilly would ever be a guest

Andrew Dunn

Fake fan. Princess Celestia has a flying chariot pulled by pagasi.

Apparition

Also please I beg of you please watch the musical Spies are Forever at some point 🙏

Squash fei

Ok first of all putting a fish in a submarine is not like prison it’s like a car or a train or something. And second of all sharks are little darlings who have been stereotyped but are relatively docile compared to, I don’t know, pregnant detecting dolphins and boat eating orcas.

Squash fei

god AND a blindsight mention... truly this q&a is for me

alexandra

Oh that’s very true

James

absolutely hooting and hollering about a sci fi season. kjb if you cover the abyss my life IS yours

alexandra

A very obscure suggestion but for heist season I'd love to see you tackle the near forgotten (even here in Ireland) 1997 flick 'How to Cheat In the Leaving Certificate'. It's a indie dark heist comedy made for about ten quid that still managed to get a national release in Irish cinemas and got complained about by the government. Graham Jones who made it posted the entire thing for free on YouTube a few years ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Od5clyN0M)

Ross Nolan

Much as I like it I think 'Hot Fuzz' is 100% a cop movie and best saved for a police/detective season.

Ross Nolan

I would absolutely love to know if The Fifth Element counts as a heist movie? (And, secondarily, would you cover it?)

Leo Curtis

Also, would hot fuzz count as heist season? I’d argue it’s at least heist adjacent

James

Nova if you like small marsupials, would recommend Australia tree kangaroo. Funky and very rare tiny little guy. Once saw one in northern Queensland

James

Looking forwards to Now You See Me in heist season and watching the crew get increasingly irate at the blatant wizardry.

Erik Levandowski

Yes, pease and thank you!

Doug King

We meet at dawn! Choose your weapon!

Doug King

Our cat is named Singham after that very movie

Liz and Ash in Florida. It's very hot! Climate change will kill us all.

The end of I Saw The TV Glow is that I, the viewer, transitioned. I've watched so many trans stories that didn't resonate because they were about the euphoria of transition. It took the movie about the unending hell of repression for it to finally click.

Upthorn

Was the "what did James Bond do to that guy?" From Octopussy? I thought it was Dr No, but they might have done it twice.

Damien Tonkin

I know you might want to move on from the 1950s and 1960s but there's some banger French robbery movies in there like Le Cercle Rouge and Rififi.

Antti Helin

SAMOYED SUPREMACY! Brushing a Samoyed daily is good - and Necessary- for the dog, and its good for you as a bonding activity; When you bring a Sammi into your daily routine you can use the time when brushing as meditation time! Also this allows for your Sammi to be exposed to being tumbled around as you brush legs, belly and withers without reacting badly, which is good for vets and when they are due for their barber visits 😆 But as November said, as with all Dogs, it takes alot of care for such a dog, but I fully believe its worth it!

Parent, Child, Adult, Babe, It is our duty to give Palestine aid!

Kelly's Heroes and Three Kings would be a GREAT Robbery season double bill! (with a bonus crossover into War season)

Moray Macdonald

Kelly's Heroes is a great shout, I'd love to see it compared and contrasted to Three Kings

Moray Macdonald

Second, if you are still looking for film recs, I hope we cover the Mission: Impossible films this season (very heisty and a spy franchise you haven't covered yet). I also want to see To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything on a bonus episode

Jazz Fox-Canning

First of all, while Princess Celestia does have wings, she is shown to ride in a ceremonial chariot, which I agree should be called Mare Horse One.

Jazz Fox-Canning

I feel the urge again to lobby for two french films for Robbery Season : Max et les ferrailleurs (1971) by Claude Sautet, it's about entrapment, with great performances from Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider. A lot of Guys in there and a lot to talk about. The other is The Trouble With You (2018, fr: En liberté!), a rare action comedy with Adèle Haenel in the lead role, very horny in a fun way. Matches your respective freaks or so I hope. Thanks for the podcast ❤️

spunups

Big fan of HotD. More Abby beating the shit out of polish royalty, please.

Jon W

I don't know if you guys are still taking suggestions for movies to cover but I'd really love to see you guys cover Kill Bill (vol 1 and 2)

Jasper Robbins

I'm also currently reading Cuckoo. I agree that it's a much different story and slower of a burn than Manhunt, but it definitely feels like Gretchen Felker-Martin is getting quite proficient in writing many unique characters at once in the same story, I'm enjoying it a lot

Valerie's Gradual Futchification

Opossums are clearly the best marsupial

Ophelia Beatrice de Sica

Also Devon, if you can get one cheap, get a Jobo Processor for color dev at home. Needs water supply, but I also jerryrig mine to the sink, so that’s actually not that much of a problem.

Nys

If nothing else that movie is the most accurate depiction of how American city politics works on the ground - uncanny

John Leavitt

Actually met someone a few weeks ago, who does air freight management as a job and he told me about flying horses, which is apparently pretty awkward to do. The more you know🌈

Nys

Apocalypse season. Please :)-

Miriam Hoffman

RE: the ending of I Saw The TV Glow I went with a bunch of trans people and my *whole row* watched until the lights came up as we NEEDED it to be a fakeout

Chloe Lynch

“ Dog day afternoon “ Please 🙏 💜

Hannah Reid

Suggestion for heist season: Widows (2017, directed by Steve McQueen, starring Viola Davis)

Beach Boy Sammy

Can’t wait for the Hudson Hawk episode.

James Cézanne-Taipale

Part of the sub-species cop movie

Public Universal Foe

Muppet rock

William Chamberlain

_Star Wars_ and _Rogue Onei_ are in heist season, for the stolen plans.

William Chamberlain

Throwing in a suggestion as tangentially a heist movie: “Jackie Brown”

Consider Q-ing up TrashFuture’s Operation Clippy

Also, MASSIVE yes for Four Lions and Inside Man!

Lauren Shear

I literally did pause the podcast to go watch I Saw the TV Glow and I died

talkingsoup

From fundraising for a Gaza family to standing against bigotry on your home turf, I heartily salute you Devon!

Lauren Shear

Did anyone else think Abi was saying that Devon was her favourite marsupial?

Michael Tonus

If they don't do The Great Mouse Detective for heist season I will be so sad. I think there would be soooo much material there. Especially as a follow up to Flushed Away but like as an actually good movie.

talkingsoup

November said L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat was from the 20s. I’d like to have her state issued cinephile license revoked.

Harold Gottfried

The gasp when Devon mentioned I Saw The TV Glow. So worth it.

ComicTF

I’ve already recommended How to Steal a Million for Heist Season, but I’d also like to recommend The Great Muppet Caper. It’s the best Muppet movie (yes, better than Christmas Carol) and is legit hilarious.

Brian Taulbee

There was one episode where snog marry avoid basically detransitioned someone. In like you're going to stop wearing makeup and only wear boy clothes from now on

Angel-of-Deadlifts

If you’re looking for Egyptian Spy movies, Boy from Heaven could be really interesting to talk about I think

Theodore Hall

RE: Robbery season; start with Heat, Fast and Furious as your long runner, Ocean's as your live show series. Watching the three of y'all on stage talking about some of my all-time favorite films? Yeah, I need that.

Serenity Holbrook

Just b/c his name was dropped in the recording: What does Tim Walz say about masculinity?

ARL & JP

If you do a Wong Kar Wai season I can help organise a live show in Hong Kong.. maybe Chung King Mansion!

Maloria

The best dogs are Swedish Vallhunds which are the husky corgi ones but they're actually their own thing not a Corgi X!

Angel-of-Deadlifts

Please ruin us on Iranian movies! Give us A Taste of Cherries and Marmoulak and and and! (Can consult if desired)

Final Bond Girl

FWIW, it should be possible to get I Saw the TV Glow via most places that sell VODs, so you don't need to see it in theater (not sure if that's different in international markets). As of like last week, it was announced as coming to Max (guess I'm a commercial now...), so that's another way it would be possible to see it. No, I'm not just sharing this because I dream of a bonus episode on it so you can get into the meat of the film... Just mostly. But I also get being afraid of it hitting too close to home. I was, too. And in a few places, it did.

Violet

Fake fans, Princess Celestia has a chariot pulled by four pegasi.

Sammi

Still hoping for the Kingsmen series. Or at least just an episode on the stinger after the credits of series prequel The King's Man(2021)(ww1, spy), that stinger had me Citizen Kane clapping and yearning for thier ww2 movie

Bilbro T. Baggins

It has long been one of my favorite heist films. It is underappreciated in the genre.

Doug King

I just opened my phone to drop a Kelly's Heroes mention. You are doing the lords work

Bilbro T. Baggins

Holy shit! My question was answered!

Doug King

Kelly's Heroes is a two for. Heist and war movie. I would die happy if they did a Fast and Furious season. Fast Five is an actual heist movie. Heists are not the center of most of the other pictures, especially Tokyo Drift. I'll volunteer my services as SME for the Fast franchise.

Doug King

Samoyedwave mentioned

Ineloquent Reverie

Is Goodfellas a heist movie?

Skate Bush

Please, please do Thief (1981).

Zeroisanumber

I think it would be possible to fold kidnapping season into robbery season! Like this you could potentially talk about Rush Hour and get some good kung-fu on either the main feed or the bonus. It's also a good entrypoint into buddy-cop films! Once again I am on my knees, presenting my sword as allegiance to you three. But the sword is actually a copy of C.R.A.Z.Y. by Jean-Marc Vallée on DVD. It follows the story of Zach through his childhood and adult years, fighting against his homosexuality and struggling to find acceptance in himself and his family. But it's also so much more!! I'm straight-up willing to buy a copy and mail it to a KJB po box if need be, it's a good film I promise

Prince Jade

For heist season I would like to suggest The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I know it sounds like a joke but they are definitely heists. They assemble teams, they make elaborate plans, they execute the plans (which go wrong), and they show the aftermath of their heists. In the case of LotR it's a reverse heist too which I think is fairly novel.

mark bondioli

Suggesting for romance season - Tootsie! Gender AND acting!

Ros Ballinger

Alas it is not available here

Gilded Dragon

It's absolutely a heist movie, I second that.

I'm not reading this name.

Heist movie suggestion: The Great Muppet Caper.

EMC

Can we get KJB does nostalgic kids films - I want to hear you all talk about Don Bluth films and what it has to say about masculinity, and the live shows become ALL the Land Before Time films.

Matthew Maddock

Is Ghost in the Shell (1995) a Spy Season pick?

Frank Leonard

Throwing Gattaca (1997) into the ring for a somewhat sideways robbery season pick (you can steal an identity right?) - has a lot of topics to discuss including some interesting trans and masculinity takes; also a fantastic performance from Ethan Hawke!

Willow Morris

I now require Nova to show up to the next liveshow in a shark costume.

Camoose

The first time I ever listened to this pod, I skipped the q&a's, and then months later I finally came back and listened to them and discovered that they were the source of a decent amount of the shows lore, including the first mention of Uncle chops and the spray bottle.

Andrew Dunn

Also, my god, I Saw the TV Glow. What a masterpiece.

Antichrist Against Fascism

for heist season can you guys watch Snatch please

Ysa

I asked a ska question and I'm a little sad that they didn't PICK IT UP PICK IT UP PICK IT UP.

Saint Muerte

Last episode of Robbery Season as it leads into War Season: ✨Three Kings✨

Lukeaqueer

For heist season, I'd love it if you watched The Town with Ben Affleck

overlord105

I've never watched Snog, Marry, Avoid, but with your description I now need Milo's Kier Starmer to narrate a segment on dressing respectfully

shadowcb

I think the real question is "WHY did James Bond do to that guy?"

BarFly

Carol (2015) mentioned! Really looking forward to it.

neoncity

A good odd ball robbery season pick would be Sexy Beast

Dean Sartorel

It doesn't explain Everything but tbh it explains enough that youse were dog kids

chronicles of girldick

also to be clear this isn't even parasocial I just love talking about Japan and Japanese cinema

Alex de Winter

I maintain - if y'all ever need a legit Japanese studies correspondent, hit me up! I'm a Japanese politics specialist who works largely in anthropology but also does (and did) both contemporary and more historical Japanese history - I can show off my degree and also my student ID at a legit Japanese university too (plus I speak Japanese)

Alex de Winter

Nova turning into Frank Reynolds in the intro - “Hi ladies, I’m Frak- SHIT”

Jack Connell

Ready to get parasocial!
