Which river should I do next?

With just two videos of the Thames series left to edit and release I’ve been beginning pondering which river I should take on next. While I do have a couple of potential candidates in mind, before I share these I’d be very interested to receive your input. Which river would you like to see me tackle?

Comments

The river Don, starts on the Yorkshire moors, bump n scrape in low water right through Penistone and outside Sheffield, locks out into the Trent I think?, then Humber if your going all the way? Lots of industrial parts and then quiet parts.

Glenn Homer

River Douro in Portugal (ends in the ocean!)

Ekaterina Deliagina

I would suggest the Werra river in Germany. It starts in the Thuringian Forrest, it flows through wonderful and diverse landscapes and long sections are identical with the former Iron Curtain - you can see it (still!) when observing the vegetation sorrowly. You would pass forrests, fields, huge artificial salt mountains, sandstone gorges, lakes and old towns with beautiful frame houses. You would end at the Weser Stone in the beautiful small city of Hannoversch Münden (many old houses etc.) where the Werra and the Fulda river become the Weser river - which could also lead you to the Noth Sea...

Lucas Sichardt

Since it's you I guess you could technically go up the Rhine, cross a canal, and end up in the Danube. North Sea to Black Sea. Though probably impossible solely human powered...

Chris Olsen

I want to say the Mississippi River here in the US, but there are a lot of large fish and predators lurking in and around there so it might not be safe for a kayak. Maybe try the Hudson River instead, and finish in NY/NJ?

Kimberley Baxter

Not a river but a challenge could be start in Lake Superior or Lake Michigan and go all the way to St. Lawrence

Morgan

The Rhône, lake Geneva/lac leman and all the way to the Mediterranean.

Benjamin Demicol

The river Severn as it has some incredible landmarks along the way.

Charlie

The Severn. Some beautiful scenery. Or the Leeds Liverpool canal so I can come and wave when you pass through Chorley

JacCar411

Hello i m from Germany and on my last England Trip the most stinky river i saw was the Aire

The Murray River in Australia ! Will be a toughie, but would be good to raise awareness of some of the ridiculous water use that goes on out there ...

Samuel Urquhart

i'd say Tevere from Rome could be amazing!

Stefano Teto

If you wanted to go the US route, the Hudson is a good option and comparable to the Thames in some ways! 300 miles, lots of pastoral towns at first and culminating in the tidal portion with New York City.

Katie Clark

Would love to see you do the River Trent, I am part of a steering group to improve the Trent headwaters around Stoke and Newcastle-under-Lyme and would love to get in touch!

Sam Shaw

Elbe or Danube! that would certainly be a journey :)

Lotta T

The River Trent. When’s episode 7 being released, we have a really impatient 12 year old who has been gripped by your adventures!

Mary Margaret Phillips

The Wye is a really nice river, with some great stops along the way

jon hawkins

Just finished your unicycle trip. Well done. I’d recommend the Cuyahoga river. It has a positive story to tell that is applicable to any river. Not super long and the start and end are about 50 miles apart.

jeffrey clark

River Clyde

Steven Friel

River Trent?

Paul Hodson

When’s episode 7 out !

Alex Rutherford

STUART LAWRENCE

The Murray River, Australia

Alexander Broomfield

Danuber River come to my mind. I remember vividly the lecturer in the River Risk Analysis class brought this topic, highlighting the transboundary river basin management and its shared responsibility. It's the 2nd largest river in Europe too

Hana Syakira

The Spey or the Dee . Both flow through the Cairngorms National Park -- the Spey is the fastest river in the UK flowing into the Moray Firth and the Dee flows through Royal Deeside to Aberdeen and the North Sea.

Andrew Duncan

The Amazon!

Martin Dykes

Dnister or Pripyat 🇺🇦

Ruslan Khroma

Do the river Avon it goes through loads of places even where I live, be interesting to see where our local river leads also when the next edits coming out as I can’t wait

sammie snook

River Clyde

Aidan Vincent

xerohmega

I've done that, paddling underground through stockport is cool.. spooky but cool.

Al

…or if you prefer Nee York paddle the Erie Canal

Bill Robert

Travel from Old England to New England and paddle the Connecticut River!

Bill Robert

You can do the Loire river

Daniel Horaczek

Danube would be unreal. Brilliant views and points to stop off at. How ever I feel like there’s somthing interesting about doing UK rivers.

Con

Mersey, start at the goyt down to Stockport where it becomes the Mersey then on to Liverpool

Tom Brown

doubt this would be possible, but it would be interesting to watch.

unpluggedlamp

While of course absolutely ridiculous, I would absolutely love to see that.

cvdvds

Danube River (Its fucking long) xXx

That Dumb Kitty

The Nile

David Coope

Colorado

Drew Trembley

In Scotland you can paddle from Fort William to Inverness. Essentially from the west coast to the north coast. Not a river but canals and lochs

Fiona Rennie

Mekong

Nicoló Menardi

What about a french one like La Loire ?

LEFEBVRE D.

Amazon River

Proud Californian

Congo river.

HeybridgeLockKeeper

I would love to see this since I've wanted to do it myself (in a motorboat)...but probably too long for a kayak?

Dustin Geddes

What about a canal? The Leeds Liverpool Canal could be interesting. Mind you, I’m not 100% sure it’s doable….

Matt Bell

When is your next video coming out

Emma Dowden

Just to clarify my earlier statement: you 1000% should not do the Nile and will almost certainly get f’d up if you do. Do the Avon!

Luke De-Sciscio

The Ouse because it flows through Ely Cambridgeshire and that’s where I live haha

Michael Rogan

Pick one of the UK’s chalk streams/rivers

Charlie Roberts

river trent!

Morgan

Actually, I’d like to see you get back on the unicycle again and cycle through a country or countries. It’s so interesting to see your interaction with the people and the environment.

Bob Emmerich

Severn or Tay?

Oscar P

Trent, Nene or Great Ouse

Dan

I'd like to see you right hook some piranhas in the Amazon

Alex Whiteboy

Yeahhh see aquaholic on his boat

Ben Griffin

The one in East Sussex?

Ben Griffin

River nene (in Cambridgeshire)

Max

Not a good place to be??

jeffrey clark

Cuyahoga River Birthplace of the Clean Water Act here in the USA because it used to catch on fire. Now it’s a beautiful beautiful success story. With places like Kent State and Akron and class 4 or 5 rapids and national park, industrial city of lights at the ending at Lake Erie. Flows north and south. Roll on big river, roll on

jeffrey clark

ouse

Alex W

the Columbia river would be amazing

Jacob Stillwaugh

The river Wye

Thomas Valentine

Hudson River in New York!

Alexandra

+1 do the Mississippi!!!

Alexandra

The river Trent is probably a hard sell but if you ever do it my house open for you to stay in when you pass by!

Zosko1

Do the Mississippi

Sophie Wyllie

The river Nene

Alex Hadwen-Bennett

I think the Severn

Damian Shaw

The mersey!

Callum Rich

The Danube!

Simon Fraser

River Severn!

Stephen Andrew

Tweed would be incredibly scenic, driven alongside it many times, but not sure on the logistics. Locally to me, we have the Itchen, Wey, Blackwater/Lodden but often very veiny and shallow - less of a definitive route as you get with the Thames.

Michael Coster

The Missouri (Lewis and Clark stylee)

Arthur McConnell

The river severn

Fyn

The maas or Rhine through the Netherlands. Doing it from the source would be extremely long

Kevin de Bruin

Garonne/Canal du Midi from Sea to Sea

Jibby

Mississippi!

Matacoyo

I really have no idea which river I'd like to see you tackle next. But whichever it is I'd suggest to check contamination levels. We'd hate to see you get a nasty bacterial infection! 😬

Matthew Pederson

The Mosel river would be a nice France/Luxembourg/Germany trip and if you would want to extend the challenge even further the Rhine would be a great option

Maximilian Blatt

River taff in wales would be wicked through the centre of Cardiff at the end, lots of cool sights along the way

Joe Driscoll

Navigating Venice on a kayak/boat?!

Mai

River Clyde? Scotland

Georgie Hakney

Seine would be fun

Sasha Agapov

River Wye or Tweed if in UK is a requirement. Ardeche River in France otherwise

Colton McCallister

Hoe River

Miranda Searle

Highly recommend river Severn. River source location in Plynlimon easily accessible through Hafren Forest. As you head back through Hafren you can get some incredible drone shots. Lovely landscapes then through Wales as it heads to Shrewsbury, there is a weir in this town which may pose an issue but you'd be able to pull the kayak over it via rope on the side path. Then head to Worcester and eventually Bristol. Huge challenge! Would be incredible it's something I always wanted to do.

Tom Davies

I’m not really versed in Scandinavian geography but a Swedish river could make a great trip through less populated nature while still not being out in nowhere.

Yunus

River Severn - Longest river in the UK - I did a field trip to there, only warning would be how it is Mountainous

Dannsync

Mississippi, Nile, Amazon or Joan Rivers

Jonty Bonty

Mississippi.

Jackson

The new river! (This is a horrific suggestion!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_(London)

CJ

As James Evans suggests, the Tees is a magnificent river but don’t paddle over High Force!

Phil Dennis

River Clyde

Matthew Blaney

River dart, added bonus of Dartmoor for most of it and beautiful Devon countryside for the rest.

Lucas

The Colorado

Will C

If you're up for a major mission, the Rhine might be a perfect candidate - while it's long, it's perfectly doable with plenty of major landmarks and there are quite a few side arms that are way more interesting than the main channel. You might have to navigate the falls right at the top, though, and not all the locks are passable by kayak.

DL1JPH

Haha he can have a cohost named Jim

Andrew Wenger

The Danube would be crazy long 😆.

Thiemo Fischer

I think the river Trent or the Ouse may be cool (basically I think u should go on the Humber)

Flame Pillar Rengoku

The Rhine or the Meuse

Frost

You say that, and yet the state of Victoria alone is roughly the same size as the entirety of the United Kingdom.. but, indeed, local bias agrees with you. I love seeing the birdlife that appear in Ed's videos, and Australia is very rich in avifauna..

eegle

Sounds suicidal

Adam Faruqi

And do it on a ramshackle raft like Huckleberry Finn!

Adam Faruqi

the St. John’s river in Florida is the longest river in the state flowing from south (Indian river county) to north (the city of Jacksonville) and has a slow flow of 0.3 mph and is often described as “lazy”

Bane

River Severn as it travels from wales into England then out into the Bristol Channel. That’s a real challenge

Slugsy

The river Clyde lad.

Stephen Meredith

The

Bane

How about the mighty Murray River in Australia?

David Lewis

The river Ouse or river cukmere in East Sussex

Ben Griffin

I suggest the river Rhine, from the alps to rotterdam. Glad to share everything i know (done it already and loved it)

Starta Baba

He could take it from the source in the Appalachian Mountains to where Kentucky River enters the Mississippi River.

Mike Habersack

Id love to see the Connecticut River, it goes through the heart of new england and you'll have a wide diversity of scenery.. BUT River Shannon in Ireland would be more appealing, lots of nastiness in the CT River unfortunately.. Love ya ed, great job on the series!

Brian Sackett

Lune

Michael Armer

Or the Ohio to the Mississippi and on to New Orleans.

Willie

This was my first thought - reverse the famous Lewis & Clark journey. It would be a long journey.

Willie

Very pretty state.

Willie

Now that would be a journey!

Willie

From a New Yorker…the Hudson!!!!

Kyra Aviles

The Severn/Wye would be great to raise more awareness around pollution, there's so much agricultural runoff around there which has been the focus of a few big campaigns recently. The Wye also has a designated bathing section near Hay on Wye which as far as I know is still yet to meet safe standards since it's been designated

Zara Preece

River wye. It’s really nice

Nathan Bull

Vistula in Poland is an absolute treat. It runs through some of the most beautiful scenery and urbanisation in Europe, spitting you out in to the Baltic Sea all the way from the meeting point of Czechia, Slovakia and Poland. Plenty of good food, clean water, fresh air, and enough sight-seeing to fill your boots for life.

Samuel Shepherd

the river loddon

Richard

The river Trent

Ben Emery

What about the river Tay in Scotland

Brettcav1991

The river Moldau in Czechia!

Benjamin Maga

The Mississippi

Andrew Wenger

Somewhere in Scotland please!

Lauran

The river Severn

Kristian Wilson

100% the Severn ! Its beautiful

Nigel

The Kentucky River in the US. You WILL have an interesting experience

Mike Habersack

Honestly the River Stour is a treat.

Joseph Oliver

What about the Danube?

Max R

The Missouri to the Mississippi would be really cool.

Tyler Peitzmeier

The river Severn

Nature Sway

The river stour

Alexander Leon

With over 85% of the worlds fresh chalk rivers are in the UK I think the rivers Test,Itchen or Meon. This would show case some of the UK’s most beautiful spots especially in summer. Take care, Chris

Chubby Adonis

I don't know how feasible it would be, but the Seine would make for a really interesting comparison to the Thames.

David McClelland

I don't feel like the US is a good place to be right now but if that ever changes, I'd love to see you explore the Mississippi, which starts in my own state of Minnesota and goes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico

River

Thjorsarver glacial river 230km Iceland, Rhine, Rhone are two Swiss glacial rivers. Basically saying do a glacial river the source is very interesting and added temperature challenge.

Matt Farrell

Severn. Though you'll need to be careful of some of the rapids.

Callum George

The river Ribble could be interesting and also a challenge ?

Jack Kay

I've thought about traveling down the river Otter personally. Just because it's my local river that I've lived by for decades.

Edward G-Jones

Trent

Mark Lawson

htzltn

Trent

Ian Baker

Obviously the Nile or the Amazon. Go big or go home

Philippe Henderson

Go from uk to france down the channel would be a good one

Max

I understand the USA is quite unpopular right now but there are some amazing rivers with interesting histories and questionable futures in the USA. The Colorado River with respect to water rights and the Mississippi River with respect to climate change and flooding. These rivers go through urban and remote areas with plenty of natural beauty and cityscpes like New Orleans in Louisiana.

spoonyfork

River Avon would be great! Beautiful the whole way down.

Zachary Stone

I would recommend avoid the USA for the time being. Logistically, other rivers in the UK make sense, especially with local support and language barriers not being a problem. It doesn't need to be an exotic choice, just being on the journey with Eric is what really matters.

Rod Hannah

Trent but that's just me being selfish lol

Dominic Hardy

Doing the most famous river in each country of the UK would be cool, or whichever passes through the capital cities. So the Forth would be very cool, and finishing up in Edinburgh

Ewan MacNeilage

River irwell

Darren Singleton

Nile

Dan Boulter

The Shannon could be great if you fancy something a bit wilder (plus the Irish are great). The Severn if you feel like staying in the UK. Po in Italy could give a similar feel in terms of distance. Can’t wait to see you at it!

Alex

the severn! goes through some lovely places and it’s only a little bit longer than the thames.

Charlie Riley

Ounasjoki in Finnish Lapland

tuomas klemola

The Hudson in NY would be beautiful, and end up in NYC.

DotDotKomi

Surely it's got to be the Severn, longest river in the UK!!!!!

Paul Atkins

Amazonas

cravingtiger

Please come to italy!!!

Stefano Teto

Severn seems like the next big one to do! But two great rivers local to me in Sussex are Adur and Arun.

David Bennett

Medway! my local river

Josh 🇬🇧

Colorado River from USA (Grand Canyon) to Baja California, Mexico

James Lombardo

The Tay

Calum Shaw

The Wye! Would be very interesting for your water quality tests as there is a lot of community campaigns going on to address the current issues of polution. Look up the Friends of the River Wye for more info.

Rob Thomas

Severn or the Trent

Zac Holden

Forth or Spey

Rebecca

River Trent would be quite cool, takes you straight through the heart of the city and you’d get to pass Nottingham Forest’s and Notts county’s football stadiums which could potentially harbour some great drone shots etc.

Lee Beardsley

Completely unbiased, I swear: I think a German river would be awesome! I reckon the Ems/Rhine/Mosel from source to sea would be an amazing trip with lots of culturally rich cities and even better nature surrounding it!

Lara Thle

Severn or the Wye

Oliver Kirkham

The Rhein is only 1230 KM!

Dafydd Elias-Evans

Hi Ed . I used to live near the River Medway in Forest Row East Sussex. Just a suggestion . BTW ❤️your channel

George Mumford

Rhein from Switzerland to North Sea

Daulet Dauysbekov

Severn, or the Danube?

Lewis Hourihan

The River Shannon in Ireland would be ✨

PHNX

Joel Andres

The river Tees would be awesome, if you do it I work at a Pumping Station Musuem on the banks of the Tees which you’d be able to visit if you wanted
