Crows and other corvids are such wonderful birds, astonishingly intelligent and hugely misunderstood. Here in the south of Spain we have our own special corvid, the Azure/winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus) - I often see them on walks and sometimes from the terrace. At one time they were thought to have been introduced to the Iberian Peninsular from China and Japan by Portugese sailors but genetic studies have shown they are a completely distinct species to the Asian birds. As far as I know they are not protected and if something - disease, for example - was to hit the population they could go the same way as these critically endangered crows.
