2024-08-17 18:52:23 +0000 UTCTerribly depressing but absolutely essential viewing which deserves a far wider audience. I've been moved by the horrible demise of the Great Auk for a long time. It is sobering to note that, while some have sought to downplay the culpability of the people responsible for the extinction of this species by claiming it was a different time with different attitudes, the contemporary accounts you quote clearly demonstrate that people were aware of how immensely cruel the exploitation of the Great Auk was.
