An original 12 based glyph numeral system for use in your game. I reckon this can easily fit in a fantasy setting as a lost civilisation's numeral system, it's straight up and down design being good for stone. That said, this could also be a weird alien cypher in a sci-fi setting, using a digital display instead of stone.
The rules that determine the first 4 numbers (0, 1, 2, 3) – or square, dot, dash and pipe – are used to build every other number in the system, making this a more elegant solution than simple number replacement with a funky character.
For example, the 3 is the vertical line or pipe. Two pipes is 6. The 4 is the horizontal line or dash. So two dashes is 4. Sound simple enough right? It's that both dashes and pipes are used to make all numbers up to 12, and thereafter rules for either addition or multiplication are used to make any number up to 20736. You could make a larger number, you'd just need to invent a glyph for 144*144.
Included in the 8pg pdf is a breakdown of the rules and examples of how to teach the system to your players without just having them roll an Intelligence check.
