TotEM pdf + 1 pack of 50 images

Hi all, I'm making the TotEM pdf available for free and the first 50 images.

In the past I’ve called them zones, locations, cards when trying to explain the idea, but now I call the images Totems. It’s from Theatre Of The Mind (but with “Elucidated” added cos there’s pictures yoh! and it starts with an E in exactly the right spot! TotM becomes TotEM). It’s also because a Totem is a symbolic reference to another thing. A visual cue to some conceptual doppelganger. Whenever you see this style of text, that’s a Totem in the description.

A totem could be a big thing, or a small thing. It could be a Table in a room, the Room, the Building, the City block or even the whole City. Whatever is conceptually most relevant for the encounter. The Table could be critical if there was something valuable to get on it. The Room may be critical if it was connected to other rooms the players were searching through to find something (the table!). The Building could be important if the players are scoping out the street, hoping to see who is the last person to leave it. The City block is relevant if the players are canvassing many blocks with local knowledge checks. And the whole City becomes relevant when moving on the regional map, or marshalling the sieging forces against the city’s defences.

Totems are meant to help build the framework of connected concepts that would otherwise only be described in the Theatre of the Mind. A mental model if you will. The beauty of them is that they are just narrative hooks to get the players to more quickly see what you see – a shared visual shorthand and instantly have a grasp of the available actions to them. They should not be seen as a delimiter to an intended action, in the same way a battlemap’s finer details should also not be a delimiter on something the hero wishes to try do. Eg: just because the battle map of the inn doesn’t have a mug on the table, doesn’t mean the player can’t ask if there is a mug on the table for him to pick up and throw. This is still a game of the imagination. Even if there isn’t a totem for a house’s windows shouldn’t mean there are no windows — it just wasn’t narratively relevant until a player made it so. If you are quick and have a Window on hand, slap it down on the table and impress your friends.

Sometimes this mental image can be long serving; like the layout of a village that the heroes return to time and time again (so the Church is in the middle, the Docks down by the Lake’s edge, the North gate against the Forest and the Baker is right over here - imagine each of those locations represented by a Totem and as more locales get added, just add more Totems), whilst it may also be used for just one encounter when investigating a homicide at a crime scene (the Body is crumpled at the bottom of the Stairs, but the murder weapon - an Axe, is embedded into the Wooden banister at the top of the stairs, there’s also a suspicious Puddle that is not drying up by the Kitchen door).

I have additional packs of images
