While researching this video I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on disasters that have been caused by someone shouting "Fire" in a crowded place. Although I haven't done videos on them yet, here are two that really caught my attention.
One incident took place at the Surrey Garden Music Hall in London in 1856. A popular preacher was there to deliver a sermon to more than 10,000 people inside the building, with thousands more waiting outside. When someone shouted "Fire" there was a mass stampede, resulting in seven deaths.
On another occasion in 1884, someone shouted "Fire" during a performance at the Mount Morris Theatre in New York City. Although it definitely frightened many of the audience... on this occasion a panic was averted, the play went on, and the man who had shouted was arrested on the spot.
Two similar situations... with two very different outcomes!
