There are many tangents and side stories to this disaster that I wasn't able to include in the video. One of them really stuck out to me, though: the story of Barbara Morgan.
Barbara was also selected as part of the Teacher in Space Program, and was to be Christa McAuliffe's backup. She was, in fact, watching the launch from the ground when Challenger exploded. Here's a video of her reaction.
For most people, seeing a shuttle explode in flight would be enough to put them off space travel for life. But not Barbara. After the disaster she went on to train as an astronaut, and then took part in a mission to space in 2007. Once that was taken care of, she went right back to being a teacher at Boise State University. By any standard that's a pretty amazing career trajectory!
