With this story, I wanted to nudge you toward one of my sources. It's this one, which concerns the actions of Pierlucio Tinazzi, who rode into the tunnel on his motorbike and lost his life while helping an unconscious driver.
Immediately after the disaster, it seems, there were some inaccurate reports of what Tinazzi had done - with people saying he'd ferried up to ten people out of the tunnel over the course of multiple trips.
That's not what happened, but I think the fact that the story circulated in the aftermath is interesting. It speaks to the desire people have to find something good or to identify a hero or heroine when something terrible happens... and it shows just how difficult it can be to pin down a story right after a chaotic event like a tunnel fire.
Of course, as the author of the piece concludes, Tinazzi's actions are no less heroic for the fact that he only entered the tunnel once. He still risked (and ultimately lost) his life in an effort to help a stranger... which to me is incredibly heroic, whatever the outcome.
