I'm happy you learned to stop. We're all different and while I wasn't someone who would self harm, I was also not the type who wanted to harm others. As a result, my lashing out became destructive to inanimates around me. Losing both maternal grandparents to cancer and having my Dad flake out and leave us right in the middle of all of it... well, I thank God I learned some coping mechanisms that worked. 'Count to twenty' and 'breathe' never did it for me either. I still don't know how my Mom handled it, metal e with me added on.

Honestly, that's a nice twist on the usual motherly advice. I never heard of anyone comparing to the usual "take a deep breath " to smelling flowers 💐 and blowing bubbles 🫧, but Honestly, that makes more sense to a child than just telling them to do the action. Growing up, I was told to "stop and count to twenty", but due to my condition, I was quite self-harming until I learned to stop. My childhood was quite a stressful life. She's a good mother. Reminds me of my late Mother.
