NEZUKO’S BOX!! 📦💕😈

I haven’t posted a full tutorial yet, so here’s a step by step of how I made NEZUKO’S box from Demon Slayer!!

Tools:

Materials:

1) After measuring my sister (who I was making the box for) I decided a good scale for the box would be 22x11in. I cut three 20mm foam rectangle panels and two 20mm foam square panels out of high density EVA foam. For the door I cut a slightly smaller 20mm panel to slot into the front of the box (20x9”). I used a dense foam with a shore hardness of 60 to ensure that that box would have plenty of structure. Everything was glued together with contact cement and I added hot glue to the inside seams for extra stability.

2) I also cut two smaller 20mm foam rectangles to hot glue inside of the box to create shelves. Mainly to create some handy storage for convention trips, but it also provides way more stability to the box!

3) To create the wooden texture, I covered the whole box in 2mm foam, then took a hobby knife to lightly score the surface in vertical straight lines. I then carved away 3 parallel sections on each side with a knife to create the illusion of the. wooden panels.

4) For the metal details, I used a mix of 5mm and 2mm foam. Everything was glued down with contact cement. Once everything was dry, I sanded any rough seams or edges with a dremel, then heat sealed the foam with a heat gun to smooth out the rough surfaces. I then attached googly eyes to act as metal rivets.

5) Everything was sealed with three thick layers of black Plastidip, I allowed each layer to dry completely before applying another layer. Since the box is quite big, I used approximately 2 1/2 cans of Plastidip… 😱

6) To paint the box, I mixed a few different brown shades of acrylic paint, applying them thickly with a scratchy old chip brush to create a fake wood texture. I applied different shades randomly while the paint was still very wet to blend the colors and create a more natural effect. The black metal and shadows were painted using an airbrush machine, but it can easily be done by hand as well. Once the paint was dry, I applied 3 layers of clear satin top coat to seal my paint job. After letting it set for 24hrs, I used a bit of silver wax paint and a q-tip to apply small amounts of paint to the edges of the metal details to create a weathered/chipped paint effect.

7) The door was given small black hinges which were attached to the box with super glue, same with the door handle as well. I used the screws that came with the handle for a bit more security.

8) I sewed two 3” wide vinyl straps for the backpack harness, then used a hobby knife to cut four slits along the metal details of the back of the box. They were then fed through, then hot glued “very professionally” to the inside of the box 👍

TADA!! That’s how I slapped together my Nezuko box!! I made this in 3 days, just kinda figuring things out as I went. If I were to make changes, I would pick a slightly harder foam for even MORE structure, and opt for Flexbond instead of Plastidip, I think the brush strokes from Flexbond could have actually added to the wood texture.

Overall, I am very happy with how this tunred out!! It’s super lightweight and sturdy, and it can perfectly fit my giant Nezuko plush 🥰👍❤️ Hope this tutorial helped or was interesting, let me know if you have any questions in the comments!!
