100% Will is only there because they were childhood friends. He is exactly the person the rest of the group outgrows. Not only is he stuck in 6th grade logic, and temperament, when they will be heading into 9th grade (summer before), he is a huge downer. He makes it unpleasant to be around. Mike was right to call him out. They clearly still want to be his friend but you can only put up with that for so long before you realize you are happier when you don't see them.

Mike and Lucas can’t understand what Will is feeling and they are growing up normally like Will would be if he hadn’t been traumatized.
