At least some of these atrocity stories are probably mere wartime propaganda. I'm sure Uday was an awful wicked man, but some of these allegations are just a wee bit over the top, don't you think? If 1/10 of these stories were true, one could only conclude that either Saddam was unable to control even his own household, or Saddam psychopathically approved of his son doing things like raping brides. (Didn't Caligula do that?) Whichever conclusion you reach, the stories are "evidence" that Saddam was not fit to hold power, let alone control the "weapons of mass destruction" that were being talked about so much in those days. I was surprised Uday was not accused of bayonetting babies, til I realized that there was no population in Iraq whose babies we were supposed to feel sorry for (just ask Madeleine Albright), and - incidentally - that particular baby-killing story is still in use today, to justify a different war.
