Food for thought. I agree.

Reminds me of Werner herzog’s film school where he only teaches the students how to pick locks n’ shit like that lol. I agree. Nothing beats life experience, introspection, and a curiosity for things outside of the medium you work within.

Having a great film knowledge/influences is important. But it means nothing if you have no life experience to drawn upon for your art and stories. Otherwise it's just a pastiche. Which is fine if that's what you're after. For me, I tend to get bored by the novelty of that.

I’m a brand new filmmaker and think about this a lot. I have several shorts now and it seems everything I do is ripping off lynch or jodorowsky in some way lol. But, all of our favorite directors were constantly homaging other directors (even Lynch). The problem is when the director doesn’t add anything new to the conversation or have anything interesting to add to said homage. It has to be a “yes and” as oppose to “remember that one Kubrick shot?”

Amen! Hollywood might as well be renamed Homagewood today. He would've lost his mind if he was still alive.

It’s not a movie, but I’m currently writing and illustrating a graphic novel that’s basically a blend of Rear Window and Studio Ghibli. So I feel particularly called out 😂

After reboots, sequels, and requels (I think we’ve had a few of those), I’d say that homages are done for pretty much every movie ever.
