Apollo space capsule stability tests - Supersonic Small Scale Project

We test out Tim Hamilton's Apollo capsule-shaped projectiles to see if this shape, fired BACKWARDS would fly in a stable manner.

Apollo space capsule stability tests - Supersonic Small Scale Project

Here is a small lower mach number supersonic tunnel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9FJgxwnD6AThe tunnel used for the reentry tests of the Apollo and other capsules, had to go to 30+mach not just 1 or 2. When you get into hypersonic ranges like bullets [see mach number needle lower portion of picture] heating becomes a problem. Now the shape of the capsule was designed to move the shockwave and friction forward off the surface [bow wave or detached shock rather than a oblique shock] to prevent melting like this... even at about 7-8 mach. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RChlt5wdqBs

Basic supersonic shockwaves, and shape https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tpwj5rA-OQ Transition from subsonic [non-compressible air flow] through transonic conditions [transitional air flow] and into supersonic [compression-able flow] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2Hfukjqv7IWhy is the capsule designed the way it is? It has two different flight modes a) launch and b) reentry where stability is important. How to do this design one side for on stable situation and design another for the second. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j493HvCkMbM

The silly putty isn't THAT sticky. It has to stick a LITTLE just so the slug wouldn't fall out of the shell prematurely.

TAOFLEDERMAUS

That's the plan. I wanted to recover as many as possible. That will probably be this month's give away, and I usually throw in extra stuff too.

TAOFLEDERMAUS

thanks!

Like Dannys t-shirt, Bush Company is a gas

Jeff, I'm thinking that if you had put some corn starch or baby powder between the slug and the silly putty it would have separated cleaner and not had a sticky release, which is probably why a few of the putty slugs tumbled.

Very cool guys!

Robert Hanlin

Would love to have one of those for a souvenir!

Geoffs question of the day....to Danny..."do you have a knife ?" haha

Patreon give away? One of those "re-entry vehicles" would be quite a prize ;) ...

Awesome work! The water tests were a highlight for me, I wonder if that would be useful for other rounds?

LukeTheJoker

Great video. Loved that history/background intro Thanks guys

TheNetsrac

Interesting. For something with no spin it was fairly accurate.

We shall see...
