Depression-era .22lr ammo - well preserved

Danny and I will be filming TOMORROW  so don't freak out.    I just wanted to show off this very old box of ammo.    It promised to prevent your bore from rusting,    but  was basically just coated with cosmoline.   What a mess!

Cosmoline...sorta like that ugly first car almost every kid owned...sure, it it did a good job; but it was also a hot mess.🤣

I used to shoot a muzzle-stuffer when I was a kid. There was a bunch of us that got together to shoot regularly. I never did like Pyrodex and stayed with black powder. The old timers in the group recommended that you clean the your firearm with boiling water and dish soap, then (after rinsing and thoroughly drying it) you apply oil to prevent rust. The idea being that the soapy water would dissolve the residue from the black powder better than gun oils and solvents, which tended to turn it into a gummy mess when it mixed with black powder residue. I don't know how accurate they were, but being just boys and the youngest of the outfit, my buddy and I did as our elders told us, and it worked out okay for us. At the very least we got in the habit of paying extra attention and taking extra care when cleaning our smoke poles. That being said, I imagine the manufacturer-recommended initial cleaning with boiling water was meant to make sure that you started with a very clean bore with none of the highly corrosive black powder residue left in it. (Of course, this is assuming they had switched to smokeless powder by then, which I believe they had). However, this is just a theory and all speculation on my part, and I have been wrong before. It does have my curiosity up, and I will do some research to see how far off base I am.

They shoot better than you'd think, too!

Pre- NFA bullets.

Even though many people couldn't afford new guns during that time period, Americans were still willing to donate some of their firearms to help the British when war broke out. It was a different time.

Boiling water was needed to get rid of any residual corrosive salts from previous use of corrosive ammunition.
