Testing some rare S&W Police slugs

We test out some very old slugs which were meant to be used as an anti-materiel round.  (commonly misspelled as "material" ).

Designed to penetrated engine blocks and other barriers.   The problem is they are about 45 years old.  (older than a few of our viewers!)   Actually a good demonstration of what happens to some powders after so many years.

I made an order from Ballistic Products a couple months ago and someone there tossed this in the box.  I guess they wanted us to make a video of them!

Jeff.... Perhaps this will help you with identification of powder types with some certainty.... a 10x magnifier of some kind will be helpful as they have color dyes, shape, and size range markers you can use to identify.. Just casually looking... This gunpowder looks likely to be Alliant Green Dot, see link... you will notice at that source you can find the markers or identifiers for determination of what powder it actually is.... which is rather easy with the reference link below, and having a small sample of the powder. Nitrocellulose, has a very long to indefinite life so single base powders are pretty resistant to degrading.... but this is not a single based nitrocellulose. Nitroglycerin types higher energetic powers are double based and are abiotic. Some additives like diethyl phthalate, are abiotic and also subject to degrading. However Diphenylamine is used mainly for its antioxidant properties, in gunpowder it is a stabilizer, as well as it dissolves well in many common organic solvents, and is moderately soluble in water so it is used alos as a dye mordant and reagent and is also employed in agriculture as a fungicide and antihelmintic. Ethyl centralite is added to also further stabilize along with diphenylamine but it works directly by ethyl centrality in stabilization.... explained below the link in classifications of gun powder. 2-nitrodiphenylamine is a double-base (DB) rocket propellant and gunpowder stabilizer and its microencapsulation potentially improves the shelf life of DB rocket propellants. It is one of the component of Otto Fuel II, a propellant in torpedoes. Powder for fast burning... and of the high energetic types have a high content of nitroglycerin up to 45%, and those will degrade faster. For example Olin produced Ball C the Army's old original ball powder developed for the 7.62 NATO... then used as replacement, thanks PEOA at Picatinny, for the 5.56 round which caused all the problems in VN with the M16, by replacing the specification requiring IMR single base nitrocellulose. When surfacing additives are put on the powder to control burn rate, some of these deteriorate over time too; the additives universally slow prorogation of the flame by putting a resistive layer additive to the surface of the powder, therefore, as this ages it breaks down and allows faster burn rate. Sad to say these surfacing treatments are usually used on ball and double base high energetic compounded gunpowders, like Green Dot with its all the constituents being inhibitors of degradation -> except the primary energetics of nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerin <-, the inhibitors : Diethyl phthalate Diphenylamine Ethyl centralite 2-nitrodiphenylamine This powder is susceptible to abiotic environments existing inside of sealed ammunition, typical abiotic factors can include water, light, radiation, temperature, humidity, atmosphere (particularly oxygen), acidity, and soil... these factors lead to degradation. As the primary energetic is nitro this is high abiotic susceptible, as is nearly everything else in it. This means even in sealed ammunition the gunpowder with degrade... for better or worse.... even with all the inhibitors. Moisture or heat speeds its deterioration; a combination of the two has extremely damaging effects. Classification of Smokeless Powder Smokeless powder is classified into two types: single-base and multibase. SINGLE-BASE POWDER.- Single-base powder consists of colloided NC with other materials added to obtain suitable form, burning character, and stability. Several single-base propellants are in use today. MULTIBASE POWDER.- Multibase powder uses NG and/or NQ in addition to NC as explosive ingredients. Such propellants are commonly called double-base (NC and NG) and triple-base (NC, NG, and NQ). One double-base and one triple-base propellant are in use today. Index of Smokeless Powder Smokeless powder types are assigned class designation letters that designate the chemical makeup of the powder as follows: SP -Smokeless powder B -Blended C -Stabilized by ethyl centrality D - Stabilized by diphenylamine F -Flashless powder G - Includes nitroglycerine and nitroguanidine N - Nonhygroscopic W - Reworked by grinding X -Water-drying process These letters are followed by a number that indicates the sequence of manufacture. The combination of the letters and the number is termed the index or the lot of the powder. The combinations of the class designation letters are described below. SPC.- SPC is a cool-burning, single-base smokeless powder (SP) with ethyl centrality (C) as a stabilizer. SPCF.- SPCF is a single-base smokeless powder similar to SPC type of powder but containing a flash suppressor to render the powder flashless. SPCF is found in all NAVAL 5"/54 universal charge, full-service propelling charges. SPCG.- SPCG is a multibase smokeless powder stabilized with ethyl centrality and includes NG and NQ in its composition. Although the designation letter for flashless powder (F) is not used, SPCG is a flashless powder. SPD.- SPD is a single-base smokeless powder stabilized with diphenylamine. In the water-drying process, the powder is seasoned in tanks of warm water to remove volatile solvents, followed by a brief period of air drying. SPWF.- SPWF is a flashless powder made by the reworking of ordinary nonflashless powder.

Heh, so 45 year old powder loses potency, so do females. Men, not so much. Maybe make a male version of ammo-propellant?

My favorite spelling faux pas is 'anti-venom' instead of antivenin. Ain't education the berries!

Jeff, I researched the S&W shotgun shells a bit. It looks like Alcan first and they were aquired by Fiocchi in the early 70's. So Fiocchi was making the ammo for S&W. Here is the link http://gunlore.awardspace.info/gunknow/alcan.htm
